It really hit me while watching this movie how Hollywood has lost its way.

This is the first legitimately good "blockbuster" I've seen in years.

Not since Avengers have I been so captivated by what one would call a "Big time" blockbuster style movie.

We all have become so used to shitty film making, that when something like this comes along it really highlights how utterly vapid the movie industry really is.

No wonder Tom Cruise wouldn't allow this to go straight to streaming. I completely get it now. This movie is a gem and compared to the wasteland of entertainment garbage we're all subjected to, it's not hyperbole to suggest it might even be a work of art.

Well crafted from beginning to end.

Watching this has made me realize just how low my expectations are when it comes to being entertained by movies. I'm really amazed at how good this was.

It was fantastic until the plot armor to keep Maverick alive showed up.

The cheese reuniting of Maverick and Rooster on the ground was so unrealistic.

I would have preferred Maverick going through the rescue sequence alone than what we got.

Tom Cruise cares, therefore I care.

Yep, our expectations are disgustingly low and the industry continues to lower those expectations.

I’ve only seen it once and loved it. My son has seen it four times.

It’s amazing at how simple, diverse, non-divisive, and inoffensive a summer blockbuster could be.

Infinity War was is the closest, but ID4 might be the last summer blockbuster I can think of outside of MCU, that was universally just “yeah we liked that.”

Tom Cruise is certifiably crazy. He is unrestrained ego living in a world of whim and protection. He is also the last movie star and knows his craft better than just about anyone else in Hollywood.

You gotta have all that though and it's completely forgivable with a well crafted action movie.

There was a scene in the movie The Player where Tim Robinson was discussing how studios only had the budget for about 10 movies a year and how they had to choose carefully.

Two or three decades ago, movies were so much better because the content was so much more selective. Now it's all about low attention spans and volume.

Watching this movie makes me sorta sad.

I disagree with your premise, in that I think "blockbuster" filmmaking has always been majority garbage. Hollywood being vapid has been a thing commented upon by people inside and outside of it since the 1930s.

I think Maverick is good, though it I don't understand thinking it is an elevated blockbuster. It is competent. It is exciting for the final 35 minutes.

To me it just highlights how low you guys expectations can be, whether warrented or not, that this can seem like a masterpiece. I don't mean to shite on a parade, and I'm happy a good movie is has done extremely well, but "shitty movie making" has existed as long as the moving image, and there are still great movies that come out.

The bold part is probably true. It's probably not nearly as good as most of us think it is but comparatively speaking to alot of the "blockbuster" shite we've seen over the past 10 years or so, it's amazing.

There was a run though during the 70's, 80's and 90's where blockbusters were consistently great. A legit 30 year golden age.

Sadly, I think it's a time capsule movie and why it felt so different. Given it was already ready to roll just as covid hit, this was a movie that was made outside the DEI policies that every studio now loudly screams they follow. It was a movie that put story first and everything else behind it.

For now, at least, those days are over for the vast vast majority of movies and shows. Maybe Cruise will have the green light to make his MIP movies like he wants, but people thinking this will turn the tide of bullshite are going to be sadly mistaken I think.

Keep in mind in Idiocracy, they didn't go from Shawshank directly to arse. There were 500 years of declining shitty movies that got to that point. This only stops if people stop going to shitty movies

And you probably wasted it on your shitty home theater when you could’ve watched it in all of its glory in IMAX.

This is a good point in itself...

It was a spectacle, and a guaranteed "blockbuster", but it relied on 3 other movies to set the stage.

There's always one.

20 years ago, the list of top grossing movies contained the likes of The Two Towers, The Bourne Identity, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, We Were Soldiers, Spiderman, Super Troopers...

This year... Maverick, Dr. Strange sequel, the 6th Jurassic Park movie, 8th or so Batman movie, Minions, 4th Thor movie, 7th Spiderman movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2...

I wouldn't call 2002 a banner movie year, but you had one big comic book movie and a variety of hits people still love. This year you have comic books and video games, which has been the story with the box office for awhile. Most are forgettable and in 20 years, I'd be surprised if anyone even mentions any of them...outside of maybe Maverick. So yes, even though "shitty movie making" has always existed, there are levels and I've never seen as low a level as the movie industry is putting out now.
