Full Metal Jacket ends in 1968, so lets all take a breath.

Shift your disgust to me calling Foley in OaaG a Drill Sergeant.

Honorable mention to Forest Gump’s drill sergeant. Small but memorable role.

Was Adolph Caesar's Sergeant Vernon Waters, in A Soldier's Story a DI, or just a guy who was a sergeant? He sure was a hard arse to those Southern blacks under him.

During the Korean War when my dad, a white boy who grew up in Arkansas, enlisted, he had a black Sergeant.

Not a movie, but did Vince Carter start Gomer Pyle, USMC as a DI, and then move to being a "regular" sergeant?

He was a sergeant-instructor so you were at least close on that one.

I have never heard that and even the reference point next to that comment in your Wikipedia link makes no mention of it.

Yeah, that was one of the gags. Carter is relieved that Pyle is done with basic and he won't have to deal with him anymore. Just then Carter becomes a platoon sergeant and Pyle is elated to find out that he's back under Carter.

ETA: Surprise, surprise, surprise!
