There Will Be Blood (33): I’m the leading proponent on this board that TWBB isn’t a good movie. I’ve beat it into the ground, you know I think it failed on just about every level a movie can fail on.
Except I thought the performances were great all around. Especially the preacher and the son. Even though DDL's Plainview was the exact same character he portrays in all of his other films, the character fit the role.
Is it safe to call DDL a character actor yet?

I am a movie snob, though I do love a good blow crap up movie (I just think they could shell out a few bucks for a writer as well). TWBB just ins't a good movie. It's been beaten to death on this board, but I will sum it up quickly:
There is no conflict. No chracter serves as a foil to Plainsview so there is no tension to drive the story or any particular scene. He will crush everyone, and since they aren't particularly virtuous anyway, I don't much care. His character goes nowhere and isn't particularly interesting. There's no character or plot development, and the climax is both ridiculous and a bore. Who cares? He wanted money, he got it and ends up alone. But he didn't WANT anything else, so there is no injury (I contrast it with Michael in the Godfather, who feels the pain of his lonliness).
And the score sucks. Unique, yes. Crappy, that too.

Absolutely disagree. The other actors were uniformly terrible, particularly Eli. He is a weakling and his inability to hold his own against DDL robs the movie of any chance of drama.
And DDL plays extremely different characters, which is why I dislike Plainsview so much. It's the first time he repeated himself and just played Bill the Butcher again. It's his worst performance (still good though, since DDL is amazing)

I think a large portion of people's dislike of Brokeback is entirely tied to homophobia.
I think a large portion of people's praise of Brokeback is entirely tied to their wanting to say they like a gay movie. Plus they like taking shots at older westerns. "Brokeback is a real western not those rah rah John Wayne all american type westerns"

Not this decade, but Monty Python/Holy Grail fits the category of wildly overrated films.

Strangely enough, I think this is also true.

Lord of The Rings
There Will Be Blood
The Departed
The Dark Knight
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
And I like all of these movies I just don't think any of them are great and often get overrated.

We should really clarify what "overrated" means.

You're frickin retarded.
LOTR is a classic trilogy, right up there with other fantastical adventures like Star Wars and Indianan Jones.

Up in the Air. Clooney is such a smub liberal POS he's miscast in this film. Even with that it's just a boring film with no point.
Napoleon Dynamite. Not funny.
Paranormal Activity. Didn't scare me. Another 'why did just pay to see this crap?' flick overyped online.
Don't understand why people are mentioning films critics hated. How are those films 'overrated'? By whom?

Chicago
Napoleon Dynamite
Juno
LOTR 3 - worst of the 3 movies and it won best picture?
Children of Men - so "underrated" it is now actually overated.
No Country for Old Men - good movie but not the "greatest movie ever" as some claim it to be
