I'd go with Lisa. I mean she is tearing our protagonist, Tommy Wisseau, apart.

I've never really thought of Voldemort as that strong of an antagonist. I mean yeah he's evil and powerful, but there's not much depth to him, especially in the films.

Probably gets left off of a lot of lists. But, definitely deserves to be here.

Agreed. If there is one villain I would not want to be captured by, Annie Wilkes is it. She's fricking terrifying. She has to be every celebrity's worst nightmare.

The fricking sledge hammer scene is burned into my memory. I can't even watch her in any other movie without thinking about that.

Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct always terrified me. A beautiful woman who seduces you into her bed then kills you, who wouldn't fall for that?

The timeline I was going for was 1990-2010. I should have made that clearer.

silence of the lambs brings forth a valid point. that this list should be split into two lists.

one for villains that you wanted to see go down (that truly invoked hatred of their character), wilkes, buffalo bill, norton, chigurh (sp?) etc. the other, just cool arse villains = joker, sose, lecter, etc.

Good list.
Some things I would have changed would have been Anton ahead of John Doe, dropping Doe down a good bit. If your basing it off crimes committed, then he's fine there, but if acting plays a part he probably shouldn't be on the list. I'd jump Hans Landa up a little bit too and have Lector #1. But I'm cool with your top three. But again, good list.

honorable mention

Jigsaw - Saw
The rich Korean dude - Old Boy
Idi Amin - Last King of Scotland
Gollum - Lord of the Rings
Hedra - Single White Female
Lil Dice - City of God

Imo Anton Chigurh should be #1.

And Silence of the Lambs should have two in the top 10 in Ted Levine's Buffalo Bill along with Hopkins's Hannibal. This is what makes Silence THE bst thriller of our time.

This. It's always Hannibal that comes up on these type of lists and never do I hear Buffalo bill come up. He's the true antagonist of the film and IMO is a memorable villain. That is one sick and disturbed individual

Gollum would probably make my all time top ten. When people mention Lord of the Rings villains as being great, they usually only mention Sauron or Saruman. Gollum however is the best. He's the most fleshed out, he's sympathetic, you can perfectly see his motivations, and he's creepy, treacherous, and scary as hell. Sure he's not as big of a threat as Sauron or Saruman, but that doesn't make them better villains.

Hannibal wouldn't even make my top 30 of the past 2 decades, since he directly assists Clarice in catching the real antagonist Buffalo Bill. Yes he has a villainous nature to him, but he's not the villain of the film.
I completely agree. He's "evil", but he's not a "villain".
