Norton doesn't get very many roles any more because he's difficult to work with.
This is the answer. He's been in some good movies, and a few high profile films, but I don't think folks go to the movies to see Ed Norton the way they do other actors. He's a very good actor who hasn't been in a lot of huge blockbuster movies and he's an a-hole.

Like Edward Norton, Hardy is someone fresh and raw and someone who quickly jumped to the spotlight after a lead role in a small film. Now he's finding his way into big Hollywood movies. As Norton became more and more popular he began to fade due to lack of the newness, and his roles/diversity faltered due to his similar mannerisms and speech/tone throughout his films.

Careful, Tom. I like you too much to see you become trite.

He plays Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. He was in Inception. The guy they met in the African bar.

Didn't realize Norton had that perception behind the scenes.

Not sure where you heard that. Met Norton in a bar once. He bought me a few beers and we talked.

Everybody I know that's come across him says he's supposed to be a total dickhead. By "everybody I know," I mean I've read it on the internet.

On talk shows I've seen him on, he seems pretty arrogant.

Norton is talented and has the rep of an insufferable a-hole and tough to deal with on a set

So he's basically been a character actor during his entire career so far. Why is this guy being compared to Edward Norton who always plays one of the lead roles and is expected to carry every movie that he's in?

He gave one of the best performances I've ver seen as the lead in Bronson. He was one of the leads in Warrior. He's as talented as anyone in Hollywood.

I'm not necissaruly seeing the similarities. Hardy is so fresh and barely has been in the spotlight it's hard to say he plays Tom hardy in every role like Tom cruise plays Tom cruise in every role. As far as Norton, that's just what most actors do. Very few actors stay full steam later in their career. Not many actors have staying power. Don't remember what year The Painted Veil was, but I enjoyed that.

Here's the deal. Any actor who becomes cast in leading roles will, over time, breed a certain familiarity with the audience because of their voice, mannerisms, etc. It's inevitable that it occurs to a certain degree. That is especially true with those voices who have a distinctive voice.

Norton's talent is undeniable. As with any successful actor works regularly, he chooses some shite movies along the way.

I would say that Primal Fear, American History X, Rounders, The Score, Fight Club, Down in the Valley, The Illusionist and The Painted Veil are decently varied movies and performances.

He does have a reputation of being difficult at times. . . challenging the director and the script itself. But he's got talent.

I'm not sure there's reason to worry about Tom Hardy more than any other actor who is becoming popular.
