quote:

Tom Cruise has a new public service announcement that he wants people to become super aware of: he’s taking a stand against motion smoothing on TVs.

Cruise and Mission: Impossible — Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie — reunited on the set of Top Gun: Maverick — appeared in a 90-second video meant to bring attention to motion smoothing, known more technically as interpolation or more casually as the “soap opera effect.” Cruise acknowledges in the video that “the unfortunate side effect” of motion smoothing technology is that it makes it seem like movies were “shot on high-speed video rather than film.” Fallout was released on Blu-ray today, which is the reason for the announcement’s timing.

Motion smoothing, once referred to as “liquid diarrhea” by Rian Johnson, is a factory setting on many television sets that is supposed to enhance the picture that appears on screen.

Motion smoothing is horrible.

Way to be redundant, clown. I would think the director of TLJ would be more well-versed in shite and its various forms.

So I should want a more jerky picture? That sounds stupid.

If you want what was actually filmed and screened and edited you want it off. Otherwise shite looks silly and unnatural.

I turn on smoothing for football and put my Samsung in Sports mode.

Looks like shite for watching anything else.

You must watch a lot of General Hospital if you like motion smoothing.

It's awful.

I already turned it on.

Motion smoothing or whatever it's called is horrible. Makes everything run soooo weird.

For live sports, yes.

For everything else, frick no. I don't even like looking at a tv at a restaurant or somebody's house with that soap opera shite on.
