If the writers had half a brain, Daryl would just start walking and go back on the road and most future episodes would follow that.

And that's it/ Micchione won't be making out with anyone for quite some time. They can't force me to watch that shite anytime soon, because it would dishonor Rick's memory.

So how is that open-ended? Did he somehow survive that and float downstream or get blown to safety, or are they just allowing themselves the option to do it in the future?

Jadis' situation was never resolved, so I guess it will be the former.
