Man, this is a pretty special movie. I love how McDonagh can so easily tiptoe between comedy and tragedy. It's so rare to be able to see a movie that does that.

For example, the scene when Chief Willoughby is questioning Mildred about the dentist incident. One minute you're laughing at some ridiculously witty barbs the characters are throwing at each other. The next moment you get this brilliantly human moment where Willoughby coughs up blood on Mildred. He's mortified and apologizing profusely. She calls him 'baby' and is so understanding/sensitive. It's hard to write this stuff, and it's even harder to get actors to pull this off so convincingly.

You're laughing one moment and then you get the flashback of her daughter sarcastically saying she hopes she gets raped and killed and Mildred saying I hope so too. You're laughing one moment, and then you feel like you got run over by an 18-wheeler moments later.

I'm just seriously impressed with how almost all the little things are perfect. Like the scene where the guy comes into the shop and throws the figurine at Mildred. He then proceeds to toy with her about the death of Willoughby and the death of her daughter. She asks him this series of questions. She remains purposeful but as he gets closer to the death of her daughter in his mocking statements, Frances McDormand changes inflection perfectly. You get this sense Mildred is trying to remain tough but she's on the verge of breaking. Sam Rockwell acts brilliantly with his eyes in the hospital after Jason is burned.

As far as things that bothered me, somebody in the other thread mentioned Willoughby's wife's accent. I felt like it changed while watching it as well. That was a little off-putting. I also know you sort of have to suspend disbelief at times with some of McDonagh's movies. I'm fine doing that with the dentist incident and the kicking kids at school. The cops probably felt legitimately bad for her and had some sympathy. But I have no idea how Jason does all that stuff to Red with no repercussions. He destroyed the shop, punched the secretary in the face, beat up Red and threw him out of a second story window in front of the new chief of police who had no attachment to him at the time. I just was baffled how he never is even detained or anything.

I mentioned the accent of Abby Cornish. Its downright awful. Id like to hear what kind of accent she was going for.

I do agree about the incident with Red. You have this new hard arse police chief standing outside watching whats going on, and then Dixon admits to throwing him out of the window. Thats jail time.

Im trying to think back to what my favorite scene was. I want to say that its when Mildred is reading the letter from Willoughby, but I keep coming back to the scene where Mildred is talking to the deer. Its simple, but it has such a huge impact, and we see Mildred breakdown for the first time.

McDormand will win the best female oscar
Pretty sure Rockwell will win best supporting actor
The movie wont win best picture though. It doesnt have the look or feel of a best oscar winner, even if it deserves it.

1.Three Billboards
2.A Ghost Story
3.The Big Sick

Thats my top 3 right now, but I havent seen a lot of the top movies yet.

Gonna have to catch it.

A movie has never so successfully pulled every emotion in completely different directions so suddenly as this one did

You go from laughing, to shocked, to choking up.

Woody killing himself in the middle of the movie was such a WOW moment and the movie really took off from there

Sam Rockwell was unbelievable

I agree about the wife's accent. WTF was that. Seemed so out of place.

The twist that the guy isn't the rapist was so great. Like they gave you the wrapped up nice ending and then just took it right out from under you, making you feel exactly how the mother felt all those years. Great writing

Saw it tonight. My dad and I were 2 of the 4 people in the theater. Sad. The fact that Justice League is the hottest topic on this shitass board while this thread has 3 replies tells you all you need to know about the average moviegoer. This is why things like 3 Billboards are rarely made.

Three Billboards and Lady Bird only made 8.4 mil combined this weekend. Justice League made 40.

I saw this one Friday afternoon, there were maybe 20 people in the theater.

Great movie, but definitely some nitpicky things that stuck out to me.

Mainly, the casting of Woody's wife... what's this 35ish year old Australian/British woman doing married to a 55ish year old police chief in a podunk town in Missouri?

Also, if the guy wasn't the rapist/killer, and he's from Idaho, what's he doing in this random Missouri town acting an arse, trying to intimidate Mildred and lying about being the killer? On more than one occasion at that, because there had to be a few months between the gift shop scene and when Dixon saw him at the bar. I have no problem with him not being the killer, maybe he was bragging about something that happened in the middle east, or maybe he was just lying his arse off, but it throws off the gift shop scene to me.

Would have also liked a little more background on the midget, other than he had a crush on her.

Still though, great movie and great acting. I'd be shocked if Sam Rockwell doesn't win a supporting actor award.

Three Billboards only expanded to 614 theaters, and averaged over 7k a theater.

Lady Bird was in 791 theaters, but only averaged about 5100.

Pretty descent weekend for Three Billboards. Lady Bird could have been better.

Lady bird broke the record for number of reviews on RT and still being 100%, beating out Toy Story 2 for that record

Might go check that out tonight

It felt like an early period Coen brothers film. Just so exciting, it could in any direction at any time. I also loved how the movie hinted at several other movies that could have been the thrust of the film, lurking in the background. This is a town in the middle of racial strife, exacerbated by an out of control police deputy, but the film wisely backgrounds it, and even manages to give Rockwell some redemption.

Since no one else has mentioned it, I thought the orange juice scene was central to the movie's theme of empathy. He did just about the worst thing you can do to Red, nearly killing him in the process, and Red, while horrified by his presence, still gets him drink. It was a perfect moment. And it set up the final scene of the film, and points that the two will also find empathy.

Either that scene or the post-Dentist interrogation scene was my favorite.

Close third is probably the final scene in the car, especially when Dixon acknowledges that it was her that burned the police station (and him) but doesn't even seem to be mad about it.

Yeah, it was the dentist scene that really just leveled me. The crazy thing is that when she called him baby, that was apparently an improv.

This movie is very enjoyable. However, it isn't a "must see in the theaters" type of enjoyable.

It hands-down wins the award for the best ensemble of incredible characters with fantastic dialogue. Truly some remarkable characters. However, the story is very disjointed. Too many scenes happen that leave you scratching your head thinking, "ok, what was THAT??".

McDormand and Rockwell both deserve Oscars. Whoever did the editing and scene selection deserves a beating. If there's ever a spoilers thread -- I'll detail what I mean about this.
