Is shooting journalist an official trump policy that I missed?

I said Trump-like. Among the two sides in the movie, one side allowed the press to embed with the military units, the other side did not allow any journalist access.

It was all typical of the Trump presidency’s unprecedented hostility toward the press. Trump has habitually attacked the news media in rallies, responses to reporters’ questions, and many hundreds of tweets. He has repeatedly called the press “fake news,” “the enemy of the people,” “dishonest,” “corrupt,” “low life reporters,” “bad people,” “human scum” and “some of the worst human beings you’ll ever meet.” As Trump told Leslie Stahl of CBS News shortly after he was elected president in 2016, he has been trying to destroy the credibility of the news media’s reporting about him.

Alex Garland has said the President is a fascist. Whatever that means. Not sure if he’s implying it to be Trump nor will he say imo.

I think part of the point of the movie is to show how blurred everything can get in these situations. Some people don’t know what theyre fighting for in the long run.

Precisely

This is an outright lie. Just the opening scene with him practicing his speech is 100% mocking of how Trump exaggerates everything. It's either intellectually dishonest or outright retarded to try to pretend that the president wasn't supposed to be Donald Trump.

I liked the movie even if it was somewhat predictable. I think I was able to guess what was about to happen in every scene.

I enjoyed that they didn’t make an outright political message, they never took sides on right vs wrong and just showed what happened without preaching to us.

The one thing that seemed unrealistic to me was how close the media was to the fighting. I know media gets close to photograph but not like, actively in the firefight right? I mean they were literally in the fighting I can’t imagine that’s the way it really fits or there would be a ton more media deaths

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe they even state who Jesse Plemmons character is fighting for officially

He’s in Army clothes but both sides were shown using standard army gear

I think it’s implied by the characters that they assume he’s with the president but not outwardly stated. It’s very clear that Plemmons character isn’t operating under any sort of official order or even for the “cause”- he’s sort of free lancing his own terror there with the power he has

His character and arc are more to illustrate that fiefdoms (often brutal and thuggish) evolve when there is a power gap. It's like a much bigger and evolved version of what happens in American ghettos or the Rio favelas.

I don't think there was any specific political commentary on what he was actually espousing.

I can’t believe this is your take. They never once gave a single political opinion or goal from either side, or really even said who the “good guys” were. Both sides were shown committing crimes on civilians, both sides seemed to kill without remorse or thought. Hell the main rebels seemed to be from Texas AND California.

The fact that you want to associate this movie with any current political climate is 100% on you and you alone

I think the hints are pretty strong! The president is portrayed as a Trump-like figure because:

1. Three-term president 2. FBI was disbanded 3. "Journalists are shot on sight."

Three things that aren’t true about Donald Trump?

I mean the movie is literally about an American Civil War so I guess it’s bound to draw comparisons to our politics. It would be just as easy to argue the president was a liberal who tried to take away freedoms like freedom of the press “for the greater good”. If you want the guy to be like a trump then he is, but we don’t even know what his politics are.
