Exactly. Saw them both. The 1973 version (and its near immediate sequel, The Fourth Musketeer) is an absolute classic. The 1993 version is fun, but basically a remake with the brat pack and can't hold a candle to the Richard Lester version, in terms of production values, acting and cast:

Michael York--> Chris O'Donnell
Oliver Reed--> Kiefer Sutherland
Richard Chamberlain--> Charlie Sheen
Faye Dunaway--> Rebecca deMornay
Charlton Heston--> Tim Curry
Christopher Lee--> Michael Wincott
Raquel Welch--> Julie Delpy

I prefer the hot as balls Faye Dunaway version.

They were shot as one film, then split into two. That incensed the actors because they were paid for one film (Salkind wanted a huge film with an intermission, they didn't decide until later to split the film).

This resulted in the Salkind Clause in a future contracts keeping producers from doing that without renegotiating a new contract.

It also resulted in their filming Superman: The Movie and Superman II at the same time, since they realized how much they could save, even with paying the actors for two films.

there is only one 3 musketeers worth watching, the 1973 version by Richard Lester starring Rachel welch.

all the rest go from sorta ok, to bad, to terrible.

Never have watched that version of The Three Musketeers. I'm a very big fan of the 1972 version.
