quote:I find Psycho suspenseful the whole way through...the music and that cop scene get it started. Now that I think about it and come up with a top 10, I'd probably have to include 1 or two of Hitch. I for sure think that Vertigo, Rear Window, Psycho and NxNW are top 20. Now if it were just my top 10 favorite movies NxNW and Rear Window would make it. Maybe even Dial M
I believe Vertigo is one of the two or three perfect movies I have seen. Maybe its not "particularly suspenseful" to you now, in the 21st century but when this came out in the late 50s, it was about as suspenseful as it gets. Same is true for Psycho, people don't find it that scary today (I do) but in 1960 it must have made people crap their pants. So by your estimation, Hitchcock didn't make one of the ten best films ever made.
IMO, the best movie ever made is on TCM right now: Casablanca.

#419 is a solid ranking for that movie
Should be in the top10 of any great movie list. It is a better movie than Kane in every way, except for the statement Kane makes.
I think people rank Kane #1 as a tradition or obligation. For movie quality, it should rank no better than 25

Could their list be any safer? I know its a film geek site, but they are only 2 films from this century in the top 200. Two.
Man, they are just clinging to critical consensus there.
As do most of these lists.
That's kind of why I like the MWADS, our mix balances out the greats from the cultural hits.
I admit, I do enjoy lists like this, particularly for film.

Yeah I may have to pass the torch at some point. After the move, I've been slammed.
I went from working from home being able to weave in MWADS work as time opened up, never having to waste time commuting and all that good stuff to working from an office for 10 hours a day every day of the week.
Excuses, Excuses. I know. But yeah,

Well I keep saying I won't let delays happen, then they ALWAYS do. That's on me.

Its been long time since I looked at their list so I'm kinda curious how many out of 1,000 I've seen by now. I'll have to total it up later when I get the time.
Well I totaled it up and I've seen 396 movies on the list. Thought it might been half but about 40% sounds right. That's why I think the list is good reference point.

This is more proof that the Shawshank crowd on this board has no idea what they are talking about. I'm almost certain that you saw, at the very most, 100 movies on that list. Yet you are so sure that Shawshank should be ranked near the very top. Maybe its top ten on a list of movies that YOU have seen, which would undoubtedly be a "shite" list. Shawshank isn't even the best movie of 1994. Pulp Fiction is much more important to film and American culture than is Shawshank. Again, I know how hard this for you to understand, #419 is a great ranking on a list that is ranking the 1000 best films from every country, ever made.

I've seen a lot more than 100 of the entire list, and I would rank Shawshank a lot higher than 419.
However, it IS only 20 years old, so maybe 50 years from now, I would think it would move up considerably from #419.
I disagree with 1994, though. I think it is easily the top film of 1994, and of the 90s, for that matter. Don't get me wrong, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, GoodFellas, Awakenings, Philadelphia, Fargo, Office Space, Being John Malkovich etc. are all good too.
For some reason, I don't get the hype of Pulp Fiction. I thought it was ok. But I would rank it about where they rank Shawshank.

I love Night of the Hunter, but there's no way I can objectively say it's top 20 or even top 50. I love it because it has some weird stuff that I like and because of Mitchum, my favorite actor of that era. And it is really tense in spots. but some of it is just silly.
agreed

You can disagree all you want, and that's fine. We are just talking about our opinions. But what you are anyone else can't disagree with is that Pulp Fiction has influenced film and culture more so than Shawshank has. As I said in my earlier post, when you are talking about all time greatness, it becomes about influence and importance. Pulp Fiction is probably the most influential film of 90's.

Night of The Hunter is a great movie. Sure its a little campy and over the top at times but that's part of its charm.
My favorite 1994 movie is The Hudsucker Proxy.

Hudsucker Proxy, Heavenly Creatures, Leon the Professional, The Lion King, Dumb and Dumber. None of these were included in the list yet Natural Born Killers was. That is one of several misses I see on this list, IMO. That speaks to how much respect they are showing Shawshank by ranking it in the top half. This website is great to use as a reference. The sortable table is great, you can organize films by year and director.

Right, and for all the people upset about there not being enough new movies they have an entire sub-section devoted to 21st century films. LINK
