Does anyone else get a kick out of it when they hear this sound effect used in a movie? It's one of the most used sound effects of all time and has been used in tons of movies.
Wilhelm Scream Compilation
It amazes me that something recorded so long ago is still used. My 2 year old was watching Sing! the other day and I heard the sound effect in the background.

The Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect of a man screaming that has been used in more than 360 movies and television episodes,[1] beginning in 1951 for the film Distant Drums.[2] The scream is often used when someone is shot, falls from a great height, or is thrown from an explosion, and is most commonly used in films and television

This (link below) is the sound effect that has become the worst offender to me, overused to the point it's become obnoxious to me. I first time I really noticed the overuse was watching Dr. Strange. It started to seemed like any time someone moved....
BVWWOOOOOOO0000000oooooooooo
Now I'm sure I'll notice the "Wilhelm Scream" which seems to be spread out a little better. It becomes distracting and takes away from the film when something is overused like this.

(if you listen with a phone or small speaker you won't hear it)

I agree.
The scream that gets me every time is Lando Calrissian's when the Sarlacc grabs him. I wish someone would sample that and use it like the Wilhelm scream has been used.

The question is why do they still use it?
Does it really save that much money to sample a dead guy screaming or is some inside joke?
Seems like Illuminati to me.

It was the first thing I thought of when that screaming goat went viral a few years back.

I think George Lucas has used it in every movie he's ever made, so I think it's an inside joke for him. That's probably the case for most of them these days.
Still, makes me laugh when I'm watching something for the first time and I hear it.

If im not mistaken its in the LOTR movies as well...i always laugh whenever i hear it in any movie

You are correct. I just read a little further on it and apparently both Peter Jackson and Quinton Tarantino wanted in on the inside joke to pay tribute to Lucas.

Yeah, I get a chuckle when I hear it too. I never looked into it before, never realized it was so old. I knew George Lucas liked to use it.

I fricking hate it. It always takes me out of the moment whenever I hear it.

Apart from the scream, there's a couple other stock sound effects I notice in movies and tv all the time and it has the same effect of taking me out of the moment.
There's the little kids laughing sound used when kids are running around in a scene that's always used.
Also, there's a metal hinge swinging sound that you always hear when a jail cell is shut or a some type of large metal door closes.

So does the 'owner' of the sound get paid everytime its used?
Posted on 6/20/17 at 4:51 pm to BlueWaffleHouse
I wondered that at one point, but not sure who "owns" the sound effect. It's definitely not the creator. Could be a studio. Could be something anyone could use. Never saw any information around that.
