I do wonder...would the counterculture/hippie movements have even existed if Vietnam happened? Would the 1960s have just been an extension of the 1950s?
Vietnam was a focal point for Americans, but the sixties youth movement was a worldwide thing, including behind the Iron Curtain--the Prague Spring uprising was one such example. Sometimes it manifested itself benignly, such as new music and clothing styles. Other times it was violent, and the US wasn't the only place. France and Mexico also had violent student protests, over completely different issues than the American ones.

Yeah, all of the guys who ran recon knew about that. A few days before going into the woods they stopped bathing and using anything scented, even bug spray, and only smoked local cigarettes, if they even chose to.
I was just about to post this. They would wear local clothing, wear sandals or go barefoot, even eat local food. Of course that only goes so far if you're a 6-4 blonde guy. As far as the conventional forces went, if they hadn't been smoking cigarettes, all the helicopters and heavy equipment buzzing around would have been a tipoff anyway.
I wonder if they will get into the SOF war? You could do a whole series about that. Charlie Beckwith was mentioned in passing, but so far that's all they've said about it.
ETA: It would also be interesting to hear a little bit about the Australian and Korean experience, both of whom contributed troops.

the M16 was fine, the problem was the first batch that were shipped over did not contain ANY cleaning kits because they weren't supposed to need them. Well, that went out the window very quickly as the gas operating system needed to be constantly cleaned and oiled in that environment. Once the cleaning kits and regular maintenance were instituted, the problems pretty much disappeared.
Wasn't there also issue with bullet size in the thick jungle? The 7.62mm performed better through the bush than did the 5.56mm, right?

I wonder if Burns will touch on the exploits of the ROK Rangers that had been dispatched to Vietnam? I worked with a guy who was there with them in VN and said that those guys were ridiculously effective when they went out on search and destroy missions

I can't believe the guns jammed like that in last night's episode. Talk about screwed with no weapon.

save this sort of melt for the poliboard please. If you're still in denial that Vietnam was a giant waste you can't handle the reality of a documentary.

No, twatwaffle, it's the making us feel bad for the NVA and such. It's entirely possible to make a historical documentary without his liberal bullshite spin. Alert us the show the cong mutilating and beating Americans. Or the rape/murder/torture of villagers by the cong. Typical left spun bullshite as before. This guy is a fricking tool.

You're even losing your grasp of basic English now, impressive. Your computer screen must be covered in spit.
I'd love to hear your opinion on the civil war documentary.

You do know that it is possible for the US to be in the wrong and to act less than honorably right?
And this documentary details plenty of good deeds and heroic actions by the US.

Maybe so, but where are all of the VC/NVA atrocities? For example, what of the incident at the Que Son orphanage?just one of the many examples that don't fit burns' agenda. Don't give me any of this shite about burns being fair.

In the last episode they mention US soldiers going back to get the bodies of those who had fallen and they discovered the VC executed them, mutilated them and booby-trapped the bodies.

To be fair, Wilson was an invalid by the time of all of this.
I am pretty sure Ho Chi Minh approached him in Paris during the Treaty of Versailles before WIlsons' stroke.

Very good series. I mentioned it to a veteran of Vietnam who I drink with. He's a know it all type, pretty smart about a lot of things.
He called today to thank me, because a lot of what is being talked about he had no clue of.
He was intelligence in the USMC..he knew shite was afoul, from what his superiors were telling but it was mostly just carry on and keep grinding away.
The part where it was mentioned about 3 days R&R for a prisoner is very true, according to my guy.
He would interrogate prisoners. Dude has some fricked up stories. Guy wouldn't talk, he gets a beating and his village gets threatened.. still not talking?...meet my German Shepherd, still not talking?..
Motherfricker had a shoebox with a viper in it that he would flip the top open and start walking out..
