The shrinking of Hollywood : 72K film jobs lost since 2022

2/3rds lost were California jobs, and even post Covid, the industry is shrinking at an accelerated rate The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in June alone, 3200 jobs were chopped in the sector. Of the film jobs that remain, they’re increasingly being moved to other states and foreign countries where filming is cheaper:

California did this to themselves.
There are actors out there protesting this job shift to other states and job cuts, but they don't realize they voted for this.

Maybe. Maybe not. At least specifically for film crews. Years ago I used to be a member of a website called Ricochet.com , and they had a podcaster named Rob Long, who works in Hollywood. A Republican, but “moderate”. Anyway, he always claimed that while producers, directors, writers, and actors were overwhelmingly leftist, the film crew guys were much more right wing. The grips, carpenters, stagehands, lighting people, etc. Very blue collar in habit and attitudes.

Been saying this for years on this site. The industry is full of families and hardworking craftspeople across all political leanings. I've never seen a Teamster wearing an Obama Hope shirt on the lot.
Film has been leaving LA for 15 years with all the runaway states and Canada. Now, Europe and Asia have stepped in to further take gigs elsewhere. A welder in Thailand? $45 a day. In LA? $950 plus pension/welfare contributions. Teamsters aren't helping either. They have some of the highest rates and health/pension packages. TV and commercial work is still very much in LA (at least the CBS style studio shows), but films are harder to come by. You don't have these problems, say in London where rates are half of the Americans and producers/studios don't have to pay benefits on top of that. In the states, that is 40% on top of the daily rate. That will add up quickly on a studio film.
Personally, I'm established and flexible enough to not be as affected but my last 5 jobs were in: Louisiana, China, Pittsburgh, NYC and Thailand. So a lot of travel and time away for most working filmmakers. That was the exception in LA until the early 2000's, now it is very much the norm.

Actually they are trying to pass a new bill to start straight up confiscating wealth from "billionaires"
Needless to say, the exodus is accelerating.
Business and lifestyle are more portable than ever before. The days of a government being able to exploit a business or industry and just have them take it are over. You can pack up and do business anywhere easier than ever.

Atlanta, GA is essentially becoming the new Hollywood. A lot of celebrities are starting to leave California and move into the area as well. Millie Bobby Brown of Stranger Things fame lives on a farm literally 20 minutes away from my parents' house.
