Good read

quote:

Because this debate is already well-worn territory, we at The Ringer set out to develop a ranking that goes beyond personal opinions—to try to synthesize the overall goals and spirit of these films in order to identify the ideal superhero movies. In order to do that, we took into account four factors—Critical Success, Box Office Performance, Rewatchability, and Timelessness—and ran them through a fancy formula to come up with an overall score. (In an effort to streamline this list, animated movies were not considered.) Here’s how each of those factors were quantified:

Critical Success (RT): This one is the simplest—we used each movie’s score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Box Office Performance (ABOR): As much as you might like to think otherwise, one of the primary goals of a superhero movie is to make money; that’s why it was given equal weight in this process. Now, because we didn’t just want to throw in a movie’s total gross into a formula— those numbers are in the millions and that’d look unruly—and because it wouldn’t be fair to equate the box office performance of 1978’s Superman with 2013’s Man of Steel, we devised a little statistic called Adjusted Box Office Rating. ABOR is calculated by adjusting each movie’s domestic total gross to 2017’s standards, and then reverse ranking those adjusted totals, so that the highest total gets the highest score, and the lowest gets the lowest score. We know, this is deranged, but it’s worth it so just stick with us.

Rewatchability (RWA): For both Rewatchability and Timelessness, a select group of Ringer superhero experts were asked to fill out a survey containing two questions for each movie that was in consideration. The first question was, “On a scale of 1-10 (1 being ‘absolutely no’ and 10 being ‘absolutely yes’), would you rewatch this movie?” The group’s answers were then averaged to achieve the RWA score.

Timelessness (RNA): The second question was “On a scale of 1-10 (1 being ‘absolutely yes’ and 10 being ‘absolutely no’), could this movie be improved by being remade?” This question hopes to determine how close to perfection each movie came—the more it could use a remake, the argument goes, the less perfect it is. Like RWA, the group’s answers were then averaged to achieve the RNA score.

After getting those stats, each movie’s numbers were run through the following formula: RT + ABOR + RWA + RNA. Each film was then ranked from highest to lowest score. All of that is to say, the higher the score a superhero movie has, the better it is.

I was underwhelmed. Those movies seemed all over the place.

I think the box office rating in particular is tricky. I don't think that's reliable because there came a point (somewhere in phase 2 of MCU) where these movies were all almost a guarantee to hit a certain threshold. I think you can make an argument that if Ant-man was released when Incredible Hulk came out, it doesn't pull in the same box office.

WW is way to high and I think that's because it's still fresh. I don't get the 8.0 rewatch score. It was no doubt a really good movie, but that's insanely high.

Using Rotten Tomatoes straight was a problem. I would have rathered some metric of CinemaScore+RT+Metacritic

Metacritic and Cinemascore are often more accurate alone than RT.

There is not a world that exists where Iron Man 3 is better than Batman Begins.

IM3 made a billion dollars. People forget....

But yeah it got a significant boost on this list from that alone.

$434M Domestic, which this list uses, that makes it #3 from the looks of it.

The only goal of the ringer is to try to be "hip" with a young audience. And they are very bad at it.

These lists are made to be "controversial" but Guardians 2 in the top 15 is only topped by Spiderman 3 in the top 30.

The criteria is stupid. It blends too many "objective facts" with subjective opinion (i.e. the box office haul and rewatchability).

We can debate Wonder Woman. People on here thought it was great. I think it's an insult to great comic book movies and particularly to the First Avenger. But there is no debate about Suicide Squad and Spider-Man 3. Those are universally panned by critics and fans alike. They have no place on a "best of" list. But box office haul has them there. That's idiotic.

Meh. Even though it was animated in no sane world should "The Incredibles" be left off a list of the 50 best superhero movies of all time.

Critically beloved, successful at the box office, very rewatchable... I'd say it hits all the bases.

The problem with the list is that the metrics are all on different scales, so it makes no sense to simply add them. Also, even if they did that well, it would make for a boring list. Have a damn opinion. Be subjective.

But also, there's no choice on there to justify the list. Not a surprise ranking for Toxic Avenger or Mystery Men. No championing of Hellboy as the best superhero. Something, anything.
