side note: the story behind apollo 8 has the potential to be the best non-fiction space movie of all if done right.

The way people are these days, I'd be worried they would leave out the Christmas Eve reading of Genesis.

Then again, someone tried to sue the US over that broadcast back in 1969 too.

Apollo 13 is better than First Man

Yeah...watch that scene again. You totally misread that. Ed Harris's John Glenn was most definitely not amused by the prostitutes who were pimping themselves out to the other astronauts. He made this abundantly clear in the very next scene where he almost gets into a fist fight with Shepard. In reality, Glenn was very much against the astronauts sleeping around and cheating on their spouses. For one, he was deeply religious and firmly believed in the sanctity of marriage. But also, he knew that if the press got wind of any of that and it made the papers, it would put a negative light on the program. That was something he plainly stated to the other astronauts that he wasn't going to allow. And they resented him for it.

I watched it too. The implication is that he too was guilty of it. Watch the scene in the bar as the two hookers approach HE AND CARPENTER.

What is Glenn doing in that moment?

I took it to mean that he and Scott thought the ladies were being nice and flirty but then realized they were banging their way through the Mercury 7.

That episode of From the Earth to the Moon is almost perfect. It would be tough to make it 90 minutes without "Hollywooding" it up.

You could, maybe do a 2-parter - covering Apollo 1, then 7, then 8. The Apollo 7 crew was the backup for Apollo 1 (at least at the end), and Neil and Buzz were on the backup crew for 8 - so you could tell (almost) the entire bridge story from Gemini to the Moon.

Again, though, that's covered pretty well in From the Earth to the Moon.

"There was a demon that lived in the air. They said whoever challenged him would die. Their controls would freeze up, their planes would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, seven hundred and fifty miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it the sound barrier."

Just reading that, gives me chills. One of the best, if not the best, soliloquies from a space movie.

The Demon...the sound barrier

Is that a man? You damn right it is...

Yep different perspective is great. First man made me realize how utterly insane you have to be to be a test pilot in those days.

I’m a huge mark for biographical dramas and space movies and I gotta say I was pretty underwhelmed with First Man. I thought the last 20 minutes were really good, other than that kinda meh. Seems to me like a script that if Steven Spielberg had gotten ahold of it could have been really great. He was actually the executive producer. I dunno, just didn’t do it for me.

The opening scene and the scene in the middle of the movie where they start spinning out of control were incredible
