If Buzz can be such a dick for being the second man to walk on the Moon, imagine how big of a dick he would be had be been first.

I saw a doc in which Buzz claimed to have invented the selfie.

Hate to break it to you, Buzz.

He was almost certainly kidding around. And to be fair, he took the first selfie in space on Gemini 12.

Most of the first pictures from the surface of the Moon were of Buzz, by Neil, so he's immortal regardless.

If only Twitter existed back then and he could have tweeted from the lunar surface.

The Right Stuff is the gold standard

It's on a different level and scale as anything before or after, and is immensely rewatchable

It's easily in my top 5, it is top 3, and on some days is my favorite film of all time

Wolfe's book is one of my favorites as well, but man it is dense

To me this is the perfect case of adapting a novel to the screen, and it's still 3 hours

Maybe, and yes, he was referring to that. Still kind of a dick though.

No one debates this and yes, I'm glad he punched that guy.

Plus, he's outlived Armstrong by so long that he may as well have been the first. He's the only one available to even talk about it, and has been for decades.

And that Levon Helm was a hell of an actor.

You guys caused me to go watch "The Right Stuff" again. Haven't seen it in years. What an awesome movie. And I never realized before that the medical guy, Gonzalez, was Anthony Munoz.

Choosing Levon as Ridley and having him narrate might have been the best casting decision in an incredibly cast movie

I'm a space nut and I love the film, especially the casting decisions that seem so right.

The Mercury 7 all had differing reactions to the film itself. Specifically, Wally did not care for the film at all and Carpenter liked it. I'm not sure if Shepard registered a specific opinion on the film, but commented that he was pleased with Scott Glenn's portrayal (I believe Scott Glenn was the only one to not reach out to his counterpart, other than, obviously, Fred Ward), and only concerned that Scott Glenn was not as good looking as Shepard was in real life.

John Glenn didn't like the way Annie was portrayed. At all. I did an event in which he was an award recipient. We wanted to use Bill Conti's Right Stuff theme as his walk-up music, but were told that he didn't care for the movie and why.

I get the impression that it was exaggerated for the film AND something that the Glenn's were very private about.

How many of you baws know that was Zooey Deschanel's mama playing Annie?

They had been sweethearts since birth, basically. Also, I didn't ask, but Ed Harris has him almost publicly jerking himself off in the bar scene when the two hookers approach he and Carpenter. He can't have appreciated that.

When the dems maneuvered to keep him from the 1984 nomination, running fricking Mondale/Ferraro instead, that was the death of the Democratic Party.

I thought that scene was a clear lead into them realizing all of the stuff going on and not condoning of it - leading to that confrontation with Sheppard. If anything - Glenn came out looking good from that sequence IMO.

Except it is, of course, nonfiction.

I liked the 2009 TV film Moonshot. They showed that happening in it.

Armstrong died in 2012. He was never much for the spotlight. He didnt see himself as a hero. Hell, he quit signing autographs in the 90s aside from rare occasions because he saw the kind of money people were selling it for. A barber sold a lock of his hair once in the 80s or 90s and Armstrong sued him and made him pay all the money to a charity

Buzz enjoys the spotlight and always did but he has also been a huge(if not the biggest) supporter of NASA and space exploration.

Yeah...watch that scene again. You totally misread that. Ed Harris's John Glenn was most definitely not amused by the prostitutes who were pimping themselves out to the other astronauts. He made this abundantly clear in the very next scene where he almost gets into a fist fight with Shepard. In reality, Glenn was very much against the astronauts sleeping around and cheating on their spouses. For one, he was deeply religious and firmly believed in the sanctity of marriage. But also, he knew that if the press got wind of any of that and it made the papers, it would put a negative light on the program. That was something he plainly stated to the other astronauts that he wasn't going to allow. And they resented him for it.

i agree. but also you answered your own question. apollo 13 wasnt meant to purely be about space bad assery.

side note: the story behind apollo 8 has the potential to be the best non-fiction space movie of all if done right.
