IMO The Return is the GOAT Comedic sequel. The Return OTPP was after a 7 year hiatus of the series when Alan Arkin stared in Inspector Clouseau. The ROTPP revived Sellers career and was a master comedic piece.

They should have stopped at The trail of PP , Sellers last.

Sellers is simply the best at the type of comedy.

Ah my little yellow friend, Cato Fong, has to be up there as one of the best "Butlers" to the star of the show. Coleman in Trading Places is a distant second.

I may have to dedicate myself to a rewatch of the entire series.

I also must say that Steve Martin was no where nearly as good and IMO failed miserably in recreating Clouseau when they tried to reboot the series.

Original series - with Peter Sellers in Bold

The Pink Panther
(1963)

A Shot in the Dark (1964)

Inspector Clouseau (1968)

The Return of the Pink Panther (1975)

The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)

Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978)

Trail of the Pink Panther (1982) Last

Curse of the Pink Panther (1983)
Son of the Pink Panther (1993)

"Does your dog bite?"

It's close between Return and Pink Panther Strikes Again. I lean towards the latter.

The Return of the Pink Panther is my favorite film of the series for this scene alone:

YouTube

The actress, Catherine Schell, could not hold her laughter toward Peter Sellers back in this scene. So Blake Edwards decided to include it in the film.

It's still stunning to go back and watch the original Pink Panther and David fricking Niven is the absolute star of the film and even Robert Wagner gets more shine than Sellers.

Clouseau is pinned for the whole crime at the end and he's basically just a scapegoat for everyone else in the picture, and even his wife betrays him and treats him like shite.

I'm convinced Blake Edwards had no idea what he had originally. It's shocking to see the difference in the character from the original film to what he became in the 70s.

It just shows you how good Peter Sellers was as an actor... See obviously, Dr. Strangelove. Steve Martin is no slouch but he was in over his head trying to recreate Cloouseau.

This triggers me. Steve Martin’s portrayal was iconic.

I love Sellers as Clouseau. Those movies are side splitting comedies. So many brilliant scenes.

The slow motion Cato fight scenes

He couldn’t touch Peter Sellers level for that role. Not even close

Honestly, no one could.

Seriously, name the actor that would be able to pull Clouseau as well as Sellers did?

Steve Martin - we've seen this and nope.

Leslie Nielson ? He was great in Airplane which is a similar style of comedy. Maybe?

Robin Williams?

Bill Murray ?

Chevy Chase?

Will Farrell

Jim Carrey?

Chris Farley?

Gene Wilder?

Mike Myers?

Dare we try

Dave Chapelle

Or

Richard Pryor

Yeah wasn’t really claiming anyone could, that was always going to be a doomed attempt to revive that part but some things should probably stay in the past for that reason

"I would like a rum."

"A what?"

"A rum."

"Oh, you mean a room!"

"Yes, that is what I have been saying, you fool."

Sellers as Clouseau is arguably the greatest comedic role of all time, but let us not shite on Herbert Lom, who played Dreyfuss. His "pompous detective slowly being driven insane by Clouseau's incompetence" routine is spot-on and absolutely hilarious.

Hobson from Arthur laughs at both of them.

Agreed, I rewatched the first one in the last couple of years and it was very bland and Sellers seemed an after thought. The later movies where he was the main character were my favorite as a kid

A Shot In The Dark, Returns, and Strikes Again all brilliant. A Shot In The Dark could use more humor but really well done and especially since it was shot months after the first release. Strikes Again was my childhood favorite because of the Soviet assassin.

Nielsen could deliver the line, but Sellers could do the physical end better.

Oh I was agreeing with you and still do with your last post.

But your post got me thinking could another actor pull of Clouseau anywhere close to how well Sellers did? Who on the list I posted? Any of them? Someone not mentioned?

One more detail we've not discussed is the theme music. It is very high on the most recognizable list

PP Theme Music

Edited to include the OG version
