The Purge (Spoilers/Complaints)

I haven't seen any of the sequels, but how frustrating is the original movie?
First, I hate this kid. He single-handedly screws everything up. I wish they would have taken their rightful aggressions out on the kid for being such a dip shite.
After that, I loathe how nonchalantly everyone goes about their day until the Purge starts. Ethan Hawke casually strolls into the house about a hour before the Purge starts. Really? You are going to risk getting caught in traffic, a flat tire, or some other unfortunate occurrence before a night of lawlessness occurs? You aren't going to take the day off?
Then, in another lackadaisical manner, you secure your house 5 seconds before the Purge starts? You really wouldn't have your house "locked down" at least 24 hours prior to the even starting?
Additionally, the daughter...while hot, they just casually allow her to go about the house while dumb-frick kids lets the stranger in? Where is she 90% of the time while the mother and father go look for the stranger?
Also, at the end, you're just going to let the neighbors walk away? The same neighbors that tried to kill your entire family? Really? Assuming you don't move, what will happen next year when the Purge happens again?
Finally, this is the best you've got for the villain? fricking Milo Yiannapolous or a preppy, elitist Alex Anzalone? Give me a break.
Good idea. Poor execution.

I watched this and Get Out close together.

The scariest part of the Purge is that people you wouldn't expect to be murderous psychopaths purging their friends and neighbors. So I think the generic frat boy and his blonde sidekick works pretty well.

Meh. The least believable part of The Purge is that "For the next 12 Hours, all crime is legal" and murder is all they really show us.
Personally, I think property crime, various types of theft, and rapes would be much, much more prevalent than murder.

Same. However, I don't think the majority of people, even the ones wanting to participate in the Purge would risk their own lives by going out and about the streets.

The series on USA shows a wider range of crimes but the movies do lean towards straight up murder for sure.

I've never seen the purge and don't really have much desire to but I have a question. I just assumed that purge day would be just like any other normal day, only you're allowed to kill. Like you're driving to work like normal but some jerk cuts you off so you kill him. Based on the info in your post it appears that's not the case and it's an all out murder-fest, is that right? And if so, why? Do regular citizens just go around killing anything and everythign they see just because they can? That seems very strange.

Also, as we got more and more years in to having an annual Purge, architecture for homes would transition to something like this:

I havent seen it for a LONG time. But if i recall. Its from like 8Pm to 8AM or something like that. Its one night a year. And its so people can get all their frustrations out.
Essentially normal people lock their house up and go into hiding for the Night. But gangs of people and other psychos go around fricking shite up and trying to kill people.
Again i havent seen it in years. But i remember that being the feel of it.
Ive only seen a couple of episodes of Black Mirror. But i feel like the storyline of the Purge would fit perfectly into one of those episodes.

I was always dubious about the notion that, because of the purge, the US is practically a utopia. I don't get the psychology of that. Because people are allowed to purge 1 night a year, crime is virtually non existent the rest of the year?

not if you give it more thought.
the ones who go out looting and firebombing would be the first cockroaches to be exterminated as people are out in the streets for the thrill of killing without consequences and you think some guy will be thinking of going out looking to loot TVs in that situation?
i agree with the OP on the letting them live part. i get the not wanting to stoop to that level shite but next year they are going to be coming back after you again because they want you dead

The purpose of the purge is to eliminate the worst fringes of society. The weakest and most vulnerable are peeled away year after year. There is no doubt this would work. The Nazis did a version of this. They killed all the gypsies, criminals, homeless and other drags on the economy. They thrived as a result..

How about a nice trip to Canada during that time?
