i think ridley scott would get mad if you called the whole search for meaning a mcguffin. that was the central attempted point of the story. now the black goo? that was mcguffin-esque

Black Goo = Smoke Monster
It becomes whatever the director/writer feels they need at the moment to support their story.
Need a life creating fluid? Goo.
Need a tentacle creature? Goo.
Need a zombie? Goo.
Need acid/weapon? Goo.
And if that article is right (and given Scott's comments, it's very close to being):
Need Jesus? Goo.
Need the Devil? Goo.

Definitely.

It may be little of an exaggeration to say it was a McGuffin, but not a lot, imo. As long as there was at least some coherency, that part of the plot was really there to provide motivation and to serve the action. Now I do think there were a few references that were meant to be taken seriously in the context of the "Alien" series, but I think the movie did fine with those.

why did the cave paintings lead them to the moon and not the main planet, also why did they need so many ships with black goo. Do they do this to other planets or couldnt have 1 ship just dropped off canisters.

Because that's where the bitches be, holmes.

i always thought that it was a test. "as soon as you can come here, we will re-assess your civilization." hell, it could be a death test: as soon as you can reach here, we need to kill you all
if you're frankenstein, you don't tell your monster your home address. you meet as a secret location
also, the moon group could have been independent. remember the big ship at the beginning? the engineers from that moon get a certain geographical location to test things, and they're left alone.
the earth may have been the only planet in their region that could sustain the life they were capable of making

does anyone think the beginning scene took place on earth?

Yes. That's how the engineers distributed the DNA on earth. The ship dropped off the poor bastard who was sacrificing himself to disperse the DNA into the water.

well i never thought of that!
I was asking because Scott hadn't confirmed if it was earth or not and said it was irrelevant
However, I had always thought it was. Just felt it was weird Scott didn't want to say it. Probably goes in line with his whole not wanting to explain ANYTHING

Scott enjoys being elusive. But that scene is pretty obvious.

I don't know if this have been covered or not, but earlier in the thread people were discussing where the ship was headed with the dr and the robot at the end. Does anyone think it was headed to the other moon. I know at the beginning 2 moons to the planet were mentioned. I figured maybe that is where they were headed.

I thought it was going to the home planet of the Engineers.

Just so I can get a timeline of evolution here:
Goo (single celled organism) > Predator/Gladiator (if goo ingested) or Snake creature > Octopus > Engineer/Octopus Alien or Human/Octopus Alien.
Someone needs to graph this.

1. the xenomorph genesis. they have the mural, which means at the least the engineers knew of the species. however, in the movie it took variables (namely, human hosts) that were not present to create the xenomporphs
I am thinking maybe the mural showing the xenomorph and face-hugger was depicting a prophecy...
The engineer's home world had a prophecy wherein one day, a creature would come along and wipe out the engineers' species. So some of the more fanatical engineers (the engineers we see on LV-223) believe in this prophecy so much that they started a faction/cult/sect who want to put a jihad on the humans (or all the other beings they have thus created). They go to this out of the way world, create a weaponized version of the black goo (that was previously used to help create life) to bring back to Earth and kill all humans.
But instead, they fricked up, the goo got out, causing the engineers to run for their life before they became infected, they all died except for one, humans show up, get infected, human-squid baby impregnates engineer, and a first xenomorph is born... a self fulfilling prophecy.

I actually like that theory

Certainly possible but since your theory is based only on the fact that the other moon was mentioned and nothing else, I'm going to say that it's unlikely.

Anyone know why they went with a young actor in old man makeup instead of just using an old man?
Was there young man footage cut from the movie, or are they setting us up for a pre-prequel?
