Yes, yes, the flying scenes are very cool. I’m sure they were even more cool when they first came out in 1986. It’s all very cool. Maverick is so cool!!!

However, the movie is 110 minutes long and only 20 minutes of it are worth watching. Any scene without a fighter in it is awful and I’d rather shoot myself than listen to the awful dialogue.

Don’t let the nostalgia fool you, it’s a bad movie. Not a terrible movie, but one where you should probably just watch clips of it on Youtube.

One of the first things this board taught me is you don't dare knock someone's nostalgia

Before I came here I had no idea grown men still watched Saved By The Bell

There’s a difference between nostalgia making YOU like a movie and nostalgia making you think it’s an incredible movie

I love Phantom Menace because I watched it 100 times when i was younger. Now I recognize that it’s very flawed but it’s still one of my favorites.

Top Gun can be one of your favorite movies. Just don’t expect everyone else to hail it as an incredible movie because you thought Tom Cruise looked cool af in that fighter when you were 12 years old.

I agree. I can't get through the whole movie.

I agree also, but is it worth bringing the wife tomorrow to see Maverick at the IMAX?

Of all time?

No.

At the time, the footage was unheard of. It still rocks.

It's not the best of all time but it's a damn good movie.

Uh, no one ever said it was The Godfather but it did rake in $350 mil with a budget of $15 mil and was the biggest movie of 1986... So yeah, people really really really liked it at the time.

Its not like mythologizing some piece of crap movie/tv show that wasn't even remotely good at the time.

Nobody is mis-remembering Top Gun like its Saved by the Bell, Full House or Tron. Nostalgia has nothing to do with Top Gun's lasting appeal, its just a good movie...that people apparently enjoyed in droves.

Don't go acting like it was a bomb or sucked and is only liked because of nostalgia... Or some retro coolness, where people pick a shite movie or TV show from the 80s and wax poetic about it...even though you and your 3 friends were the only ones who saw it.

Lol, it's not even close to being the most overrated movie of all time. The hyperbole is a little much. Top Gun is an excellent movie that blends some Hollywood dramatic license with tremendous flight footage and a decent story. It also does a great job of capturing the spirit of the naval aviation Tomcat community.

I think you mean the old one but my wife and I enjoy 80s movies and they are all crap and not masterpieces but that is why we enjoy em. We never dig to deep into plots and love them for what they are.

The original film is a masterclass at old time Hollywood movie star-making and art direction.

The entire film looks incredible, thanks in large part to Tony Scott's undeniable stylings and look. That 1986 film set the templatw for what big budget 80s and 90s action films should snd could look like. The art design and direction blows out of the water anything made in the last 10+ years.

It was so good at this, that the new film essentially coies Tony Scott beat by beat in the opening carrier sequence, because it was so iconic.

I'm going to take a guess and say you weren't around when Top Gun came out. Back in those days patriotism was still a big deal in America and men weren't effeminates. Russia was the bad guys and America was the good guys.

I suggest something easier on your viewing pallet like Turner and Hooch..

The fact that TG: Maverick is having a huge box office tells you how good that original flick was.....

A lot of the dialogue is embarrassingly bad. Especially McGillis.

Delivered in her tough guy voice:

“That is right, but I held something back. I see some real genius in your flying, Maverick, but I can't say that in there. I was afraid that everyone in the tax trailer would see right through me, and I just don't want anyone to know that I've fallen for you."

The writing is cringe and the delivery is worse.

Accidentally downvoted but I agree with the OP. I rewatched the original yesterday and it was pretty bad. My memory had built up the rivalry between Maverick and Iceman to far more than it really was. "You stink" may be the lamest put down in cinematic history. It is essentially a love story wrapped in a journey to self discovery. As 80s military love stories go, An Officer and A Gentleman was better.
