I used to think that Goose dying was not necessary and changed the movie from a fun, popcorn experience to a sad drama. Other than that, I thought the movie was a blast and nailed that time period.
But the sequel boosted the first one and made the Goose story arc not only work, it made it imperative. These movies work so well together. It’s a really good story about about inner demons, guilt, forgiveness, and personal redemption. It’s no longer just a visual spectacle.

Goose dying is one of the few good plot points

I watched it start to finish last night for the first time. When Tom Cruise was passionately thrusting into the instructor after they shared 5 minutes of cheesy dialogue on screen I realized that this was not the great film that some had led me to believe.
The flight scenes are still dope 35 years later so that was impressive.
ETA: Cruise tossing Goose’s dog tags in the ocean pissed me off. What about the fatherless child? Think he might want those some day? It was more deplorable than Rose in Titanic.
