Three Oscar wins and five Oscar nominations in 17 movies is a pretty ridiculous ratio.
But can you argue against any of those nominations or wins? Obviously a case can be made for Joaquin Phoenix in The Master but you cannot debate whether or not he deserved a nomination because he most certainly did.
His first nomination was for My Left Foot and he most definitely deserved to win. That performance is regarded as one of the finest ever pulled off by an actor. Plus his main competition that year was Tom Cruise.
His second nomination was for In the Name of the Father which he probably would have won if not for Tom Hanks and his performance in Philadelphia - though I still think he would have lost to Liam Neeson for Schindler's List. Still...a well-deserved nomination that was definitely Top 3 (maybe Top 2) in the category.
His third nomination was for Gangs of New York and I don't think there are many people out there who believe Adrien Brody deserved that Oscar. Daniel Day-Lewis should have won it that year but he was involved in a split in the voting between himself and Jack Nicholson. This allowed Brody, a comparative long shot, to come out of nowhere and win the Oscar.
Do we really need to explain away his Oscar win for There Will Be Blood? Just a magnificent performance in a year ripe with magnificent performances....his was just better than all the rest.
And this is excluding his other solid performances in films like Age of Innocence, Last of the Mohicans, and The Boxer.

For the first time in her adult life, Michelle Obama is proud of the Oscars

The frick? I have studied Lincoln a lot, and I most certainly do not find this to be true. Even his proponents don't argue for him as the greatest president ever. I started to explain why, but it's a movie board, not a history board. Anyway, I felt Lincoln was the most deserving of the Oscar, but Argo is a legit winner.

DDL's next film (in 2021) could be him shitting on a toilet and staring at the wall for 3 and a half hours and they would bow down and worship his feces.
This is a pretty ignorant statement. Unless he won for a performance he mailed in, it has absolutely no merit.

quote:No. It went up against many films, including one very flawed adaptation of a popular president. There were many others. The real test is whether or not we'll remember Argo as well as its competitors.
This is nonsensical. Argo won the Golden Globe, PGA, and Critic's Choice awards. It went up against Lincoln which is a film centered on a man who is widely considered the greatest president ever.
It's Shakespeare in Love at best, a sick joke about the effect of pop media on average opinion at worst. Either way, forgettable.

Agreed. Should the Academy start putting a maximum on nominations/wins per person? What are these people proposing?

If Zero Dark Thirty would have won, I would have compared it to Shakespeare in Love winning.

I just feel like Argo did very little to deserve Best Picture. Yeah…it was a good movie, but it had a summer popcorn feel to it. It's your typical hostage crisis movie that just so happens to be based on real events. It involves every single cliche in the book. It has a down-on-his-luck CIA agent who comes up with a plan no one believes in but somehow manages to get approved by his superiors. He partners up with your typical witty, humorous Hollywood contact who gets him in touch with your typical witty, douchey down-on-his-luck movie producer who reluctantly agrees to participate in the scheme. What follows next is one cliche right after another as the tale told by the film very rarely lines up with actual history. It's your standard, formulaic hostage movie.
It took no risks whatsoever while the vast majority of the other Best Picture nominees did take risks.

So how'd you do in your predictions? I made my list and forgot about it, but apparently I picked all the correct winners for acting, writing, and best picture. Not much else, though.

Lincoln crapped all over the Constitution. Whoever considers him the greatest president is massively uninformed, and only thinks of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. He was a great speech giver

The current First Lady is a black liberal. That makes all the difference in the world up in here.
I couldn't care less about politics, but I did find it awkward and distracting, especially at the nights biggest moment. Kind of stole the nominee's thunder imo. They didn't need to have her give a speech and actually announce the winner, especially given the Obama's connection to Clooney and Affleck. She could have presented one of the earlier montages of the clips of nominees and it wouldn't have been as big of a distraction imo.
But pretending this wasn't "groundbreaking" is pretty insincere, if not downright dishonest.
FDR addressed the Awards leading up to US entering WWII at a time when the awards were not even televised, and certainly not on todays scale.
Reagan taped a message in '80 BEFORE being elected President as a former 30 year actor and SAG member. His connection to Hollywood made the appearance very natural.
Not to mention that neither of them gave a speech and announced the freaking Best Picture winner. It was "groundbreaking" for that alone, having the envelope for the night's top prize opened 3,000 miles away via satellite, even without the political connotations.
People turning off the TV is stupid as shite, and most people saying they did are probably lying anyway because hyperbole rules in today's world.
But Michelle Obama presenting Best freaking Picture from the White House last night was extremely groundbreaking and not very sensical imo.
Didn't Bill Clinton speak at an awards show recently?? Golden Globes maybe? Maybe Academy just trying to one up??
Anyway, did I miss it, or did they not do a Lifetime Achievement Award last night??? Wtf?

Why the hell wasn't Andy Griffith in the "In Memory" tribute?

The movie doesn't have political-party politics, but the liberal voters among the Academy's 6,000 or so members might prefer something that makes them feel less queasy.
Guess this movie...

My biggest misses were in Best Supporting Actor (I picked Tommy Lee Jones) and Best Director (I picked Steven Spielberg). I got everything else right I think.

Peter Travers ?@petertravers
Chris Terrio wins Oscar for Argo beating Tony Kushner's stellar screenplay for Lincoln. To which I say WTF

Yeah that was BS but it needed it so it could win Best Picture. 2 Oscars, with won being for Best Picture, looks stupid in this day and age. It's just a shame it had to win in a category that had Tony Kushner's script nominated. I've seen both movies multiple times and you can't tell me Terrio put more time and effort and intelligence into his script than Kushner.
