Yeah, Jim's a jerk. His arch-nemesis Dwight is also a jerk. That's why he can get away with some of the cruel pranks he pulls, comedically-speaking. Every fricking person on that show was a jerk. It's like "Seinfeld" -- you'd hate these people in real life, but on TV, they're comedy gold. "The Office" is easily one of the most awkward and hilarious shows ever, and if you stop to think about how this would play out at a real company, you completely lose the thread of humor. You just have to sit back and suspend disbelief, because, man, these are some awful human beings.
You can always watch "Parks & Recreation." Same basic formula, but not quite as cringe-inducing when thinking about most of the characters as existing IRL.

It's like the rewatch of parks and rec. Leslie Knope is a manipulative sociopath with little to no redeeming qualities - i mean that was pretty obvious on the first watch but going into it with that knowledge makes you hate her even more on the rewatch. Why the other characters like her so much is beyond me.
Yeah, I never liked Leslie Nope. Agree with what you said.
And yes, Jim was not a good guy.

Jim was terrified of Roy. Schrute had to bail his wimpy arse out. Dwight was clearly the alpha of the office. (Creed probably could have been, but he kept to his own thing)

Dwight was way more alpha than Jim.
He owned and operated a 40 acre beet farm that was worth a small fortune.

The Jim and Pam subplot ruined the show for the first couple seasons. Seasons 3-4 are the best.

That's a solid description IMO.
I did like Jim, but he definitely was a smug punk a lot of times. And he and Pam were definitely better than everybody else in the office on a lot of occasions and that got super annoying
Kind of like a bed bug.

they were also the least funny characters, but I guess the show needed a few characters that at least somewhat represented normalcy.

I'd say Jim is a misunderstood jerk, because on many occasions, he'd offer an olive branch to someone who was on the verge of humiliating him/herself, Michael in particular. For all of Jim's jerk-arse qualities, no one else would've stepped up like that, so I cut him a little slack...

He isn’t misunderstood. Jim was a jerk.

That story was the best thing about them. They became insufferable once they became an item.

I've probably seen 6 episodes total of this show, but saw the entire British original and the Jim character is and alway was a jerk who felt he was too good to be working at the office he was at, yet never had the stones or fortitude to quit and find his 'true calling.'
At least everyone else was amusing and nice. He and the receptionist character were alway shite heel characters who the show revolved around, yet the heart and soul of both shows was always and always will be the David Brent/Michael Scott character. Without him, the entire show is just miserable people being miserable every episode.
Brent and Scott brought sweetness and innocence to and unsweet and uninnocent setting. That's why the shows work.

Jim let Michael fall into the koi pond.

Jim always came across as that guy in high school who is a smug wise-cracker but gets average grades and is a backup guard on the basketball team who never really gets in the game so cracks jokes about the real players on the bench.
Obviously sat the bench behind Stanley, who was clearly a superior ball handler

Roy works hard in an office warehouse and has a fiancee that works as a receptionist. Jim, a salesman, goes out of his way to flirt with Roy's fiancee all day. Roy overlooks it and is happy she has a friend
There is some truth to that, but Roy was kind of an arse to Pam, which is a big reason why she ended up falling for Jim.
But overall, yes. Jim and Pam are pretty horrible people.

The show would have been better if Jim had a long term relationship with Karen, then eventually made his way back to Pam by the final seasons. Putting them together so early killed a lot of comedic potential bc together they are both boring. They were far funnier interesting characters apart from each other playing the straight man to others hijinx.
And yes Jim is an a-hole. He made a move on another man’s fiancé. And Pam is a cheating bitchy shrew of a woman trying to come off as girl next door.
