re: The Odyssey - Movie Discussion - Spoilers

Yes, but that’s mostly Homer’s fault. It condenses some parts but the overall structure is very similar to The Odyssey. The biggest change would be the order he explains the events of his journey. In the poem he leaves Calypso’s island and tells the story about his journey to the Phaeacians, but Nolan skipped that part and had him tell the story to Calypso before leaving the island.

So you didn't read the thread. The second review was a "meh" review.
Also, do you think people are screening reviews on tigerdroppings?

Is it better than Project Hail Mary?
Because I really did not care for that film
Hard to compare really. I really liked both though. I lean towards saying it is but it might be recency bias. I went in with high expectations, like I do with every Nolan film, and I wasn't disappointed.

and cost the movie millions.
Do you have data that supports this?
No one knows yet. This is similar to the Little Mermaid movie. Technically, it was successful enough to cover its budget and make some money for Disney.
But it fell far short of Beauty and the Beast box office and other live action remakes. The studio alienated a big chunk of the audience by race swapping the main character.
For Odyssey, it was minor characters that were swapped but they were chosen for shock appeal (a tranny for Achilles and sub-Saharan black woman for Helen of Troy). The controversy clearly is helping opening weekend box office. It drives people to see what it is all about. But the test will be over the next few weeks with how strong it holds.
I think the point isnt that this movie will make money, it will. But how much more could it have made if they didn't do these two changes? An extra $300 million ww? We may never know.

Sorry, I don’t feel like enraging with disingenuous people right now. Maybe later

Just got out. I'll start by saying the first 15-20 minutes of this movie are bad compared to the rest. Tom holland is a great Spider-Man but he should have been recast. He's that bad in my opinion. The last 30 minutes or so of the movie are awesome.
What's disappointing to me is this movie could have been a generational movie if it weren't for the first 15 minutes, tom holland, and 2-3 miscast people. Matt Damon grew on me as the movie went on but I'm telling you the first part of movie had me questioning what I was about to sit through. Thankfully once you make it past the beginning, it turns great

I highly doubt the film will do as well or better than it would if they'd just left it all out completely. There are a lot of people who wrote it off and won't see it because of all the DEI stuff.
I'm sure it's costing them something, but as the DEI fanboys point out, it's impossible to determine a precise amount.
I agree with all of that. Just not going to throw around an arbitrary number and pretend like I know how much it cost them. Maybe it gained them some black viewers?
He also can't prevent ill informed rumors. Like the poster above that still thinks Ellen is playing Achilles. So people are not going to see the movie because she is playing someone that she is not even playing
Like I've always said, I hated both castings. But after seeing the movie, they are a non factor in determining if I like it or not. I would feel completely different if he had cast Lupita in The Iliad.
Maybe it does cost them a million, we won't ever be able to say. But I'm sure will take 800 million and casting who he wants over 801 and someone else casting. Could be wrong though.
Posted on 7/17/26 at 3:12 pm to iwyLSUiwy
I will say I liked zendaya in this but yeah the other 2 castings plus tom holland were just really bad mistakes. Lupita was good acting wise but you just can't cast her as Helen of Troy. It's like casting Ryan Reynolds as black panther. Just why

But yes, it was very stupid. But highly doubt it cost them millions.
You’re right. Probably tens of millions at least

That would be like casting Johnny Depp as Tonto.

I mean, that was me conceding if it did cost them millions. Jesus man, you're impossible to try and have a normal conversation with.

So like I said, was attached by you for and was correct on, $100-115 early tracking seemed low.

you have to admit, the reason people "attack you", even when you make a level headed post, is because you post so much dreck and be a contrarian just because, and lets be honest - to simply troll folks here, it is hard for people to look at your posting objectively.
not an attack, just offering up info as to why

You’re rationalizing an irrational behavior from the poster I addressed as well as others. Everybody pokes fun at some things on the board and everybody has disagreements with other posters. For example blue and I as well as many other posters don’t agree on things and agree on others but our default setting isn’t to attack everything the other says without even reading it. It’s only one group this happens with and it’s always over big budget, studio movies. The tell is if you look at the track record my predictions are almost 100% on box office while theirs are almost the inverse. The problem comes when I give the reasons for the predictions because those reasons conflict with their religion. What’s funny is this time around I predicted success and they’re still so unhinged when it comes to me they’re angry about it. As you can see in the post above even positive facts about the movie trigger them which is irrational.

Wtf are you talking about. Why would I attack you for a box office prediction lol. Please provide proof of that
Posted on 7/17/26 at 4:14 pm to RLDSC FAN
Why? When has proof ever swayed you? And it was less than 48 hours ago so like I said you either don’t even read what I post or you’re just lying about not remembering.

You're full of shite. I've never attacked you over box office. Makes no sense to attck you for a prediction. Holy shite You're a character lol
Also, discussing something isn't attacking you. You are a very defensive person
