The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)

Just rewatched this on Tubi for the first time in YEARS. I remember the hype for the Jurassic Park sequel was unreal in the 90s, especially considering Spielberg was back and Jeff Goldblum was elevated to lead status. Then once the movie came out there was a collective “meh” amongst audiences. It wasn’t hated, but the general consensus was that it failed to live up to the first movie.
Rewatching it I see a lot to like and dislike with the movie. Firstly the special effects still hold up and I will take combo cgi / animatronic dinosaurs over pure CGI. Secondly, the first half of this movie is excellent. The opening scene, the dinosaur hunt with Roland Trembo (great character) the Dino escape etc. But my God the entire T-Rex sequence in this movie with the RV hanging over the cliff is just master class filmmaking.
The problem is the movie peaks with that sequence. The second half falls apart and takes the whole movie down. Sure you have cool sequences like the T-Rex camp scene or raptors in the tall grass, but you also have extremely dumb shite like Goldblum’s daughter doing gymnastics to kill a raptor. Also the raptors are built up in the entire first movie as these highly intelligent apex predators, but in the sequel they are dumb animals and a complete afterthought. And then you have the San Diego sequence which makes no sense at all and was clearly tacked on so Spielberg could pay homage to Godzilla.
Overall the first half of this movie is the best Jurassic Park sequel in the franchise and the second half is a hot mess.
Also forgot Vince Vaughn is in this movie

The best part about TLW was the Compsognathus (compies) scene of the little girl on the beach. Taken from the original book but transplanted into the 2nd movie.
And Eddie got done wrong. Poor guy didn't deserve that ending.

TLW makes the third one look like a great movie.

I thought that the best part of the movie was Pete Postlethwaite's character, the big game hunter, Roland Tembo.

Your assessment nailed it. Some really good stuff in the first half and some dumb stuff in the second half. In addition to the gymnastics raptor scene and San Diego scene, it always pisses me off that Vince Vaughn put spent rounds in Roland’s gun when they’re on dino murder island. Like he cares more about these genetic monsters that should not exist than his fellow human beings and is willing to let them to die if it helps the dinosaurs. Just a twisted MFer.
Still, despite the bad, this is probably the second best Jurassic movie. I could sit down and watch this and enjoy it. I can’t say the same for JW Fallen Kingdom or JW Dominion.

TLW would’ve been amazing if it didn’t have the San Diego scenes in it. Or at least not the way it played out as a complete ripoff of Godzilla and King Kong. Admittedly, the intro to the San Diego part with the boat ramming into land was cool. But it just turned stupid.
Also, while the T Rex/trailer scene is cool it’s so overly unbelievable that it takes me out of it a little bit. But it’s still a cool scene.
People hate on the raptor/gymnastics scene but it’s only about 30 seconds of the movie and at least it makes sense within the plot (or her being cut by the gym team).
But all in all it’s a really great sequel IMO. I remember the absolute HYPE around this movie when it came out. And I believe it set lots of records once it was released too.
Also, I’ll always go to bat for JP3. I think it’s much better than it gets credit for.
