I was going to give this show a chance, but I think they jumped the shark with Baby Gandalf:

I can see why the first two episodes have been popular on this board. The writing reminds me of an MCU film with absolutely no nuance.

Which is not Lord of the Rings. Not going to be commenting on the show that much from here, just if some idiocy happens to come across my path.

It’s one thing to change the races of characters that already exist and have been described by Tolkien but they’re simply creating new characters. Like seriously, who cares?
I have one gripe and it was more of an annoyance. Most of the new black actors don’t bother me as sure there could be some differences or cross breeding. Though they said elves and humans haven’t mingled in a long time and Hargoots seem skiddish on dealing with other races. However, Durins wife (dwarf) absolutely shouldn’t be black. They live in caves and don’t like other races all that much so how could she be black? In the end, the actress was fun and didn’t really take away other than it being odd.
Elrond seems fun
Galadriel story kinda sucks
Harfoots seem like Hobbits complete opposite.
New guy is one of the wizards?

I’m on a mini-vacation and won’t be watching it until Monday or Tuesday, but I’m pleased about most of what I’ve read.
Likewise, the reasons that most of the haters are giving for hating it aren’t important to me at all.

Focusing on Galadriel isn't going to bring this home as far as good guys go. They better have something else or it will fall flat.

I was going to ask but didn't want it to be a stupid question if that guy is a wizard. I thought there was Sauromon, Gandalf, radagast, 2 blues but I thought that they didn't come to ME until 3rd age?
We're there more wizards in the first and second age?
Also the great eagle forgot its name was he first or second age? In the first episode the showed an eagle during the battle getting taken out but that looked like normal size eagle from hobbit and LOTR. The great eagle was massive right? Took out the biggest dragon in Tolkien universe?
I'm happy there showing more parts of ME like the south lands. There were so many places untouched during Hobbit and LOTR but I find it all so interesting - not faulting Jackson for that. But I hope this show continues to hit on the whole continent.

You are indeed correct.

No.

The Eagles are ambassadors of Manwë. They’re around Middle Earth quite a bit.

Amen.
It’s still shocking to me how many people on this board just lap up the crap these big studios put out. It’s like they’ve never seen anything well done.
Which, by the way, isn’t that hard to find in the world of LOTR. Just watch the original movies.

Originally they all came at the same time, but later Tolkien wrote that the blue wizards came in the second age around when the one ring was forged.
quote:
The time that the Blue Wizards arrived in Middle-earth is uncertain. In Unfinished Tales, Tolkien wrote that the five Istari came to Middle-earth together in TA 1000. However, in The Peoples of Middle-earth, they are said to have arrived in the Second Age, around the year SA 1600, the time of the forging of the One Ring.[3] Their mission was directed at weakening Sauron's forces in the eastern and southern parts of Middle-earth, whereas the other Istari were focused on the west.
Blue Wizards
So I'm hoping he's a blue wizards, because him being either Gandalf or Souron completely breaks later lore. Also they could have interesting stories in yet unseen parts of middle earth.

I think there's room to go deeper, and it wouldn't shock me to see it do just that.
So far, we have: Elves came over the sea to fight Morgoth. Men fought FOR Morgoth, so the Elves are occupying their lands.
So, both races have a more complicated history than that...
Elves: the Noldor came over the seas. The Sindar never left Middle Earth in the first place. The Noldor are what we typically call the High Elves, while the Sindar are the common Wood Elves. Lindon and Eregion, and Rivendell are High Elf. The Elves of Mirkwood (Legolas and his people), and the general population of Lothlorien are Sindar... and so is Celeborn, Galadriel's husband.
There's a sentiment among the Sindar that the Noldor came and stirred shite up, and they caught the fallout.
*that thought is basically what Gil-Galad voiced about Galadriel, although he's High Elf. *
I could see a lot of potential drama with that, especially with the Celeborn-Galadriel pairing.
We haven't seen the Sindar yet, they are all Noldor so far. Even Arondir and the others talked of coming over from Valinor.
In addition, most of the Elf-Dwarf conflict involves the Sindar.
I could see them come into the mix, and create problems with the groups we've seen so far. You would have Galadriel jousting verbally with Celeborn, tensions between the Sindar and the Dwarves, etc.

Cont...
Men: so far, we've only seen the Men of Middle Earth, who are basically the descendants of those who served Morgoth.
Those Men who fought on the side of the Elves, are the Edain. They were rewarded by getting to go to live on Numenor. Looks like we're about to see that, in Ep 3. That should be a huge change; they should be as advanced and learned as the Elves, standard of living about 10x what we saw in the Southlands. And being Men instead of Elves, that means big cities and such. Powerful military. The works.
Numenor is Tolkien's take on Atlantis, as one of the translated names is Atalante.
They're the Men of the West, they later built Gondor. From all of Tolkien's works, Numenor is far superior and more advanced to anything later, even Gondor and Minas Tirith.
The trailers show the palantirs, the seeing stones. Those were gifts from the Elves of Valinor (Tol Eressa), who still travel back and forth to Numenor. The Numenoreans are banned from sailing to the West. So they will have benefit of still communicating with the lands of the West (where Galadriel was going before she jumped overboard), but can't go themselves. As we know, that will eventually cause problems.

I guess because I was going into it with low expectations that it definitely surprised me. It had many mistakes but it was better than I thought going into it. Don’t even get me started with the elves hair. It felt so modernized and took away from their scenes. Might as well have given them a new Iberia haircut. I don’t have time to write anymore because to much college football on today.
I give the first episode a 7.4 out of 10.

I went in having a low bar as well, but I liked it. I have to eye roll at the woke crap but I overall liked the show. The newcguy from the sky I thought has to be Gandalf but I think that may be too obvious.

When some of the southlanders walked outside it wouldn’t have been much different if Boudreaux and thibodaux walked out next to her.
