Yup. Went ahead and watched it. Alot of slow spots. Wouldn't rewatch.

Why were all the civilian cars so old? Looked like 50s and 60s models

King wrote in the late 60's (not published until 1979) and it appears to be an alternate history post WW2 where the US economy is stagnated so hence the 50's/60's rundown esthetic.

Just watched it a couple of nights ago and it's pretty meh. Couldn't take Hamill's portrayal of the Major seriously. Interesting premise that just didn't deliver in the end (a theme it seems with King's works.)

That was Mark Hamill?

Never would have guessed.

You felt the TDS in the over-portrayal of the major. Now, if Cristoph Waltz would have played him, that could have been great. Well, the movie wouldn't have been great, but Cristoph in the role would have been great.

It was worth watching once. I think I was more entertained by a letterbox review that started with “Why would you volunteer for this contest? And then once chosen, why would you show up fat and in jeans?”

Yeah, I couldn't get over the optimism of all the participants at the beginning. This event happens every year and they act blissfully unaware of the very likely outcome.

Made even more wonky by the "we really didn't have the choice to not apply" conversations.

Pretty heavy handed allegory to the Vietnam War and draft...

That being said I did like the performances of the younger actors. Worth a watch but will likely not revisit.

I enjoyed it despite it not being very good, if that makes sense.

And if you think about logic in this movie for more than five seconds, very little of it makes much sense.

I think this is one of King's better endings. The movie changed it pretty drastically.

I think the movie is a light yea.

Agreed. Honestly my biggest issue was thw sound mixing. Whenever it was pouring rain the actors were still just talking normally. You'd be yelling to hear each other over rain that heavy.

I was especially bad at the end when the Major was talking. It almost felt like it was meant to be a voice over.

Sounds like a stupid little thing, but it was enough to take away any immersion.
