Definitely checking it out.

Might not want to have any kids in the room. It’s R rated even though it’s a cartoon.

Yeah, I clued in on that from the trailer. I watched Invincible & The Boys, I think this falls right in line.

They transpose as much as possible from the original campaign stream (Critical Role). During that stream, they swear constantly.
The first two episodes take from events that took place before the original stream. The third episode basically starts around episode 27 of the stream. (Campaign 1)
Knowing that Kelly Hu plays Anna Ripley, I'm curious how that plays out.

I know absolutely nothing about this show other than what I see on screen.
It reminds me a lot of The Guild, but 100% 'online' and very R rated.

Imagine for a second that you are a screenwriter or director in which the actors are playing characters THEY created, played and grew for 6 years prior.
As far as The Guild...Felicia Day, who founded Geek and Sundry, is responsible for Critical Role being on the air.
I read somewhere that season 2 has already been requested by Amazon.

Yeah, no pressure right?

I’ve enjoyed it so far but I definitely rate this below Invincible. It’s fun and the action is great. Story has kind of sucked though.

Slight spoilers: how will they animate Scanlan's penchant for fricking with bosses using Counterspell?

One he missed: If you take a close look at the symbols in Delilah's book, you see what looks like multiple instances of the letters C, U, N, T in succession. This HAS to be intentional.
I will have to start looking for the Matt Mercer NPC cameos in future episodes. That's a GREAT Easter Egg.

Felicia is a bit of a charmed one, no doubt. From Guild, Eureka, and even MST3k.
And dammit, I just plowed through the last few episodes and was done before I knew it. WTF is this 6-episode season crap? I hate that. Expanse only had 6 eps too. Lame.

There's still 6 more episodes. They release 3/week.

If you’re dying for more, give the actual D&D stream a try.
I recommend starting at the beginning if you can deal with some bad audio at times. It’s really amazing to see how much their game evolved.

Since this is not a spoiler from the show because they didn't use it:
In the first Arc, Allura Vysoren tasks them with rescuing Lady Kima (Dwarf Paladin played by Stephanie Beatriz) who has gone missing on a quest from her patron deity in the Underdark. They end up having to fight off a horde of Illithid and an Undead Beholder.
They then have to work for a guild because they killed a bounty without authorization.
Episode 24 is about where the Briarwood Arc starts.

Geek and Sundry rings a bell, but I have zero recognition of Critical Role. How the heck could I have watched the Guild and be so oblivious? Huh.
And certainly I know of the game D&D and a bad movie or two on the topic but is there a series or something? Again, totally off my radar.

Critical Role live streams their D&D sessions (they are now on Campaign 3); the first two have well over 100 episodes each and run between 2.5 to 4 hours long (much like a regular D&D session). You can also get it in podcast form if, like me, you have longer commutes for work and find yourself looking for something to listen to.
It varies from a lot of other "play podcasts" in that those are intended as podcasts from the start and use less in the way of combat positioning and ranges than Critical Role, as Matt Mercer has the players with their figurines on battle terrain (which has evolved a lot over the episodes).
If you like them you can also try some play podcasts, like The Adventure Zone (featuring the McElroy brothers from My Brother, My Brother and Me plus their dad) or Not Another D&D Podcast (featuring several people from College Humor and Adam Ruins Everything). There's way more out there, but I really liked TAZ season 1 and both seasons of NADDPOD. NADDPOD also does a lot of non-session content, like D&D court and goofy oneshots and sessions (like visiting Donkey Kong island or Sonic the Hedgehog's world).
So yeah, the biggest thing to remember is that the sessions are LONG compared to a TV show and even most movies. Most people don't mind at all, but if you have a bit of trouble with the lower production values during Campaign 1 you CAN skip to Campaign 2 and miss practically nothing, but at the same time Campaign 1 is the reason for their popularity and you'll be missing out.
Notable guest stars included...
Campaign 1: Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, Chris Hardwick, Joe Manganiello, Jon Heder
Campaign 2: Ashly Burch, Deborah Ann Woll, Micah Burton, and the greatest guest character of all - Spurt, by Chris Perkins

The group's first campaign began two years prior to the start of the series as a one-off, simplified Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition game for Liam O'Brien's birthday. The players enjoyed the game so much that they continued to play it while switching to the Pathfinder ruleset. After Felicia Day heard about the private home game from Ashley Johnson, she approached the group about playing it in a live-streamed format for Geek & Sundry, which hosted the show until February 2019. In order to streamline gameplay for the show, the game's characters were converted from Pathfinder to Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition before the web series began airing on March 12, 2015. There were initially eight cast member players; Orion Acaba left the show after episode 27 of campaign one. His character, Tiberius, appeared in the first seven issues of the prequel comic series Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins.

Awesome info, thanks!
Glad I waited a bit to watch VM, so at least now I don't have as long to watch the next eps.

Don't forget Will Friedle and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.
If you're enjoying LoVM, I highly recommend starting with Campaign 1. That way you will know the characters and see how they got to the part of the story where the show starts. And see the similarities and differences between the game and the show.
