I'm rewatching some of Campaign 1.
Do you think we see the vestibules in season 1?
Edit: I forgot that Sylas had Craven Edge (blood drinking sword) before Grog did.

I still can't believe they had Scanlan sing a song about anal beads.
Sam sings it live during the "watch party" to Matt and Travis' absolute horror: LINK

I understand why they changed the fight in episode 4 from the stream.
The way it ended in the stream was just absurd (Scanlan killing the final ghost using "Vicious Mockery").

I forgot about Sylas having Craven Edge too. That's a badass sword.
The fight with the undead (ghosts or wraiths?) in E4 was brutal. I love that they show the heroes getting hurt and taking damage. The life drain or what ever it was looked ghastly.
I too have been going back and watching C1 stuff. I watched C1 E24 and 25 yesterday. It's the beginning of the Briarwood arc, and the fight with them that we see in LoVM E3.
I gotta say, I really miss Campaign 1 Vox Machina. WHen I discovered it I was instantly hooked and loved every episode.
I can't say that about campaign 2. I never really liked any of the characters. Fjord started out likeable but became kinda wimpy. Beau was just annoying, which wasn't hard since I find Marisha annoying when she tries to act like a tough bitch. Jester's girly anime personality was like nails on a chalkboard. Nott had an interesting story line but was over the top sometimes. Mollymauk was Tal trying too hard and I never got the reverence for the character. Cadueces was more likeable and probably the only one I "liked". Yasha was kinda like Pike, an afterthought.
And the story didn't really grab me. The moral ambiguity of the characters and the lack of purpose made for some long boring episodes.
Now we are in C3, and I'm not getting much of an improvement. The cast has become a cartoon of their former selves, pushing every scene to the absurd. I never liked shopping episodes and last night's clothes shopping was just something from a little girls playing make-believe dress up scene. At one point I just said out loud "what the frick? This has gone on way too long with them picking out fancy clothes and where the frick is the DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS part of this D&D show?".
In my campaign if the players were in the same situation we would have had them in and out of the shop, clothed and ready for the formal function in about 10 minutes max.
The cast are having fun, and I'm glad for that. But frick man, I'm sitting here watching Matt describe dresses and hats and shite for 40 minutes.
I was really hoping C3 would get back to the old feel of the show. But so far, it's slipping more down the looney toons improv that really started on strong in Exandria Unlimited.

You must have forgotten the 2-episode long pub crawl in campaign 1 and the idiotic "recon" where they all turned into cows to talk to the livestock about the roc.
Don't get me started on the whole Darrington arc with the "Slayer's Cake" bakery...
Keep in mind that, while Matt has an overall idea on how he wants the campaign to progress, he's making a lot of it up as he goes. The "shopping trips" give him time to stall while he writes the next two chapters in his head. I don't have the courage to attempt a homebrew campaign. I'm simply not that creative.

The best character in Campaign 2 was an NPC, the Firbolg Magic Shop owner Pumat Sol.

Are you really surprised when Ashley's, Liam's and Robbie's characters are quite literally the same as their EU characters?
During last night's episode there was some foreshadowing.
Delilah Briarwood is Laudna's "patron". That's going to cause some serious problems if she's back from (SPOILER: WHAT PERCY DID TO HER IN CAMPAIGN 1).
Also, I've seen rumors that a major character in one of the arcs going forward will be Vesper (LAST NAME REDACTED DUE TO MASSIVE SPOILERS).

Point taken, and no I haven't forgotten about those scenes. But as I remember it (and I could be wrong) the goofy zany and shopping episodes were fewer in C1. There was more "meat" and less "fluff".
And maybe I like it more because the classes are more traditional D&D builds. All of the expansions to 5e have gone farther and farther in to the strange and bizarre. Especially the latest stuff where you can pretty much build a class cafeteria style with no restrictions or boundaries between.
Agree on the characters that came over from EXU, and I do like Dorian, and Orym as well. Hell, I actually like Fearne better than Tasha or Pike for Ashley. She has such a natural instinct for Fearne. And I like Laydna and Imogen a lot as well. So it's not the characters, it's their choices on what to spend time on.
Matt is a very accomplished DM. He doesn't need filler content to give him time to prepare. He's got the whole world built out in his head, and has for years. He has impeccable improv skills and there's not much the cast could choose to do that he couldn't roll with without blinking an eye.
Like I said, I just think they spend too much time playing grab-arse and not enough time on moving the story forward.
And understand, I am NOT saying it should be all combat. Some of the most awesome game nights at my table have been 100% role play, no combat. But it was meaningful interaction between characters, not fiddlefricking around with dresses and shite.
They tend to gravitate to that stuff more then they used to.
I know it's their game and it sounds like I'm saying "their fun is wrong". But I'm not. I'm saying I don't personally enjoy watching 3 hours of it.
I didn't finish last night's episode, so it may get better. I'll finish it today.
Back to LoVM. E4-6 are fricking awesome. Did you notice the shape of the table in GRayskull keep during the ghost fight? Another great Easter egg.
I wonder why they chose to go the way they did with Pike's story. Maybe as a way of paralleling her in-game absence in the stream? I guess we will see.

Vox Machina's most deadly adversary made another appearance...a door.
Also, the quick shot of Vax killing Hotis, the Rakshasa.

Taleisin test ran two brand new character builds in the first two campaigns.
Percy was a Gunslinger Archetype, which combined Artificer and Fighter, and Mollymauk was a Blood Hunter.
Aside from Chetney being a werewolf, all of the other characters in campaign 3 are standard classes.
Fearne is a Druid
Dorian is a Bard
Orym is a Dex Fighter
Imogen is a Sorcerer
Laudna is a Warlock/Sorcerer
Chetney is a Fighter
FGC is a Cleric...somehow
Aston is a Barbarian

Between their escape from Kraghammer and the Slayer's Take missions, there were only about 4, maybe 5 episodes that had actual combat. (Timeframe is episodes 11-23) The rest were filler.

Dude, I just said I wasn't asking for ALL combat and that role play can be very interesting.
I am not labeling RP "filler".

Percy was a Gunslinger Archetype,
He brought that class over from Pathfinder so it was "old" not new.
And yes, Molly was a Matt test build.
But in C1, your calling out the exception, not the rule.
Grog - Barbarian Bear Totem (Goliath race pulled over from Pathfinder)
Pike - Life Cleric (I think)
Vax - Rogue thief
Vex - Ranger animal companion build
Scanlan - Lore Bard
Keylith - Moon Druid build

I haven't played since I was very young.
If I ever got a chance to play in a group like that, I would pick a class that should be OP but with a significant flaw.
Example: A Mystic that, every time he uses an ability over a certain level of power, he has to roll a saving throw. If he fails, his synapses are overwhelmed and he goes catatonic for 2 rounds. Every save makes the next save happen at a progressive disadvantage (1st save normal, 2nd consecutive at disadvantage, 3rd consecutive at 2x disadvantage, etc.) with a progressive penalty (2 rounds, then 4, then 8, then 16...)
His background would be that he is from a backwoods area that's too close to the Underdark and his village was culled by an Illithid hive. Somehow when one of the Illithid attempted to invade his mind, it caused a feedback loop, with the resulting feedback killing the elder brain and all of the Illithid in the area. While saving his village, he was also banished because they were afraid that, while he was around, the Illithid would come back. The freak accident that caused the feedback manifested his powers.

Vax is an Assassin Rogue. The only other option is Arcane Trickster.
Speaking of Easter Eggs, "dagger dagger dagger" with them returning to him after use.

You're kinda describing a Wild Magic Sorcerer
Your innate magic comes from the wild forces of chaos that underlie the order of creation. You might have endured exposure to some form of raw magic, perhaps through a planar portal leading to Limbo, the Elemental Planes, or the mysterious Far Realm. Perhaps you were blessed by a powerful fey creature or marked by a demon. Or your magic could be a fluke of your birth, with no apparent cause or reason. However it came to be, this chaotic magic churns within you, waiting for any outlet.
Source: Player's Handbook
Wild Magic Surge
Starting when you choose this origin at 1st level, your spellcasting can unleash surges of untamed magic. Once per turn, the DM can have you roll a d20 immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. If you roll a 1, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a magical effect. If that effect is a spell, it is too wild to be affected by your Metamagic, and if it normally requires concentration, it doesn't require concentration in this case; the spell lasts for its full duration.
Tides of Chaos
Starting at 1st level, you can manipulate the forces of chance and chaos to gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. Once you do so, you must finish a long rest before you can use this feature again.
Any time before you regain the use of this feature, the DM can have you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher. You then regain the use of this feature
The Wild Magic Table has some whacky possibilities that can make for really good, or really bad outcomes.
A player at my table played one, and upped the craziness by rolling a D20 ANY time he cast a spell, thereby greatly upping the chances of things going sideways.
His backstory was that he was a Half-Orc and since his race doesn't really use magic, he was self taught and often screwed up. It made for some fun fights.

No, I'm describing an UA Mystic but adding a flaw since UA Mystics become ridiculously OP at about level 3.
Posted on 2/4/22 at 11:42 am to CGSC Lobotomy
Oh.
Yeah, everything UA slides towards OP. I don't allow any UA builds at my table for that reason. Hell, the actual released stuff from WotC becomes more and more OP with each new release.

At this point would you say they're at episode 30, 31 or 32 of the stream?
Episode 5 was 28.
VERY well done, by the way. In the original stream, Marisha is the first one to realize that the dead bodies were effigies of the group. In the series, it ends with Keylith saying, "it's...us".
In case anyone who hasn't watched the stream is curious, this is who the "Whispered One" is: WARNING: THIS WILL SPOIL THE ENTIRE SERIES. DO NOT OPEN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED. I'M NOT JOKING.
If the series lasts long enough, I want someone who is both batshit crazy and hilarious to voice Victor, the black powder merchant (even if it's just Matt doing it again). The cast had a hard time keeping a straight face during those episodes.
