The relationship between Bill and Frank was amazing. Being able to show that love still prevails even in the apocalypse.
That's great. It didn't move the plot along enough to warrant over an hour. Period.

I think they're trying to avoid TWD-itis of having to repeat the same thing 100x.
This just isn’t true. This series will be short, and has set storyline to follow. There is no reason to have an 80 minute filler love story episode with two characters who die at the end.
This episode was done as award bait and to please critics like Joanna Robinson. Do we have a Tess backstory? How did she and Joel meet and get together?
I don’t personally care about the gay shite, but make no mistake, this was very much a “hey I know it’s a giant waste of time, and these characters aren’t that important, but boy will it earn us some brownie points in certain circles”.

What bothered me the most was that it just felt like a gigantic waste of time for the most part. They could've gotten the exact same thing accomplished in half the time and still advanced the story to "Joel gets a truck and some supplies." It felt even more of a waste when we find out that neither Bill nor Frank survived, so it was quite literally a one-off episode.
Exactly this. I don’t want to be grouped with people who didn’t like it cause of the gay guys.

It gave us more details about Bill's background compared to the game. The episode was fun and a good changeup to surviving the hordes every week. However, I'm sure they knew how the episode would be received. Everyone will talk about it and it will increase viewership.

I mean...they went a lot further than just a couple of gay guys. It was pretty disgusting.

I was actually pretty captivated by their relationship. The acting and writing was strong. It just was too long for something that had little plot relevance this early in the series for 2 characters we didn't know before and won't be continuing on with us.
To Cocomo's point, if we had already known them, THEN they gave us this episode or if one of them survived to be in future episodes, it would've made more sense. I don't think the gay thing hurt it at all, it was just too long of a character development episode for characters we didn't know and won't still be in the show.
I agree zombie fighting every week is a bad recipe, but they could've spent more time on Joel/Tess trading with Bill/Frank. They could've spent more time on the townspeople being massacred by the government. They could've spent more time on a lot of things.

I was really shocked when they both died. Made the whole episode totally meaningless.

I thought it was a well done pacing episode that provided more color to the world they inhabit and acted as a springboard to the journey of Joel and Ellie moving forward. It also provided a nice contrast to live in the QZ and showed what people can still be capable of in that world.

You and a few others here are making very fair and valid criticisms. The abject homophobia just really bothers me is all.

Yeah fully expected bill to live, but guessing we are skipping that entire arc now.

You missed all the kissing and the scene where one of them went down on the other one?
Smart. I should have fast forwarded those parts too.

Could've done all of that in 20 less minutes and filled 20 minutes with more about Tess/Joel trading with them or about the government massacre on the town or about how they tried to keep stores in the town "open" or where they continued to get supplies in their area.
Etc.
All of that would've helped shape the universe more and moved the plot along or at least given us a better picture of world outside the QZ.
shite, I think they should've had a better marauder/raider fight scene. That was pretty poorly done and actually the dumbest part of the episode.

Two adults in love kissed on the lips. How horrifying.

They cut the scene the second Frank went below the covers. No noise, no change in facial expression, nothing. Extremely mild compared to things that occur regularly between heterosexual couples in media. Sorry homosexuality bothers you so much my guy. Maybe find some gay friends or something. Spend time with them and see how normal they are. Drink some beers, talk sports, do whatever. Then maybe the thought of people loving each other the way they were born to love won’t bother you so much.

I thought it was a pretty decent episode and the gay stuff doesn’t really bother me (though seems excessive most of the time), but this is the shite that bothers me. All of the critics called this the best episode ever blah blah blah. It was a solid B episode, but because there was a gay love story it becomes incredible. That’s the annoying part.
This. It was a whatever episode that got hyped as incredible because there was a gay love story. I hate shite like that.

the episode was pretty critical for moving forward
How was this critical for moving forward? Honestly. A full 80 minute episode critical. This was a filler episode and there is no way around that. Everything that this episode did with Bill and Frank to move the story forward could have been done as part of another episode in 20 minutes.

character development for Bill and Frank
So it was just for gamers then. There is no important character development because they are dead now
I'm not a gamer so I don't know a cannon debate, but after the credits the show runner basically confirmed that Bill was gay. Something like "we never met the character but we know Bill had a partner." I doubt they would have done this episode if Bill was straight though.

gay dick in arse sex
This episode was not gay porn. Onscreen, we had some kissing. If they cut that 90 seconds or replaced it with “lingering looks“ or hand-holding, you people would still be complaining. So, please, spare us the “I just don’t want to SEE it.“

It’s probably also worth noting that video games are increasingly difficult to adapt to movie/TV. Without having played the game, I’m going to assume majority of the play is exploring and killing fungus monsters that pop up between point A and point B. And by majority action sequences. At some point, directors have to go beyond that if they want to include the depth you need in a multiple season show.
As Catfish mentioned, I think it’s a fair criticism to see more of Joel/Tess’s operations in a flashback but I suspect we’ll likely get that in future episodes as they travel to try to meet up with Joel’s brother.
