Ellie has been bitten for 3 weeks and she has immunity to the fungal plague. The game actually lingers on that moment far longer than the show does and explains it better.

As far as the politics go, I mean yeah the show is a bit woke. When you race swap iconic characters that term is gonna get bandied about. The first episode at least was by no means insufferable about it however and all the actors did a fantastic job. It’s an amazing pilot.

I didn't get any woke factor. The characters were believable to me. This thread went off the rails when someone said the girl looked weird and posters starting bitching like it was so taboo to say a 19 woman looks weird. It was a shallow observation that turned a potential good thread to a shitty bitch fest.

And +1 to the poster who called out the assclowns who shite on every thread with their political bullshite.

Not reading the entire thread, but WTF kind of political BS did people find in the first episode?

You’re unlikely to find any wokeness or politics at all anywhere in episode 1 if you never played the games. Even then the only thing is basically race swapping Serah and Joel a little bit. Both actors however did amazing jobs depicting their video game counterparts so far imo though. Even then the game was by any means “woke” for its time so none of this should be a surprise. It actually worked to the games benefit imo because it helped it stand out and propelled it higher than it will in an age where literally everything is insufferably woke and the trope is tired as hell. We will have to see how they take it, I fully expect episode 3 about Bills back story to be insanely woke and just tiresome. I expected episode 1 to be a unmitigated shite show too though and it was fantastic so I’ll happily say I was wrong if it continues to be and hope it stays good.

Can someone walk through what happened at the end? She tests positive but then shows what appears to be an old bite mark on her arm? And then says something to the effect of "it's old, I would have turned by now"? I feel like I'm missing something.
You got clues throughout the episode.

Remember the kid in the "Welcome to the Boston QZ" scene? They tested him with the same device while he was strapped to a chair and then "put him to sleep" when he tested positive for the fungus. (Remember Joel burning his corpse.)

Next, remember when the Fireflies had Ellie chained to the radiator. They knew she had been bitten and were testing her over an extended period of time for symptoms, both mental and physical. For (as yet) unknown reasons, the Fireflies SUSPECTED that she was immune.

Last, remember the FeDRA medical posters on the walls in the QZ, that explained the amount of time that passes between a bite on various body parts and onset of symptoms. She was far-past the longest of those periods.

Same intro as I Am Legend IMO
Disagree.

The scene in I am Legend was hopeful. "We've cured cancer."

The scene in TLOU was foreboding. "Scary shite is coming."

The only confusing part at the end was that it required me to replay and Shazam the song. I assumed it was 80s but didn’t recognize it.

i can't remember exactly, but the posters were saying contact to the head or neck and you were gone in a couple of hours, chest in half a day, and then your extremities were 24-48 hours. she mentioned being there for three days, apparently after the bite.

Yeah, sign said neck/head 5-15 minutes, torso 4-8 hours or so and legs/feet in 48 hours.

I watch with subtitles, so the subs said who it was-Depeche Mode-Never Let Me Down Again.

Correct. The showrunners even discuss why they chose that song.

Just found this article, and I didn't pick up on any of this, but I did dose off for a second last night

mashable.com link

quote:

The clue to this final moment emerges when Ellie is first brought to Joel's apartment after being handed over by Marlene (Merle Dandridge) and the Fireflies. They're killing time until nightfall, before Tess, Joel, and Ellie plan to escape the QZ and head out on their journey. As Joel and Tess have a private conversation in the hallway about stopping by to see their pals Bill and Frank (yet to feature in the series but they'll be played by Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett) and stock up on supplies, Ellie investigates her new surroundings, finding a radio and a copy of The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits. Flicking through the book, she finds a note that reads:

It's clear Joel and Tess have been smuggling for years by this point, having set up their various channels to secure goods to trade. Part of this system is a radio broadcast from the note's authors, B/F, which must be Bill and Frank. "The radio's a smuggling code right?" Ellie asks Joel. As Bill and Frank can't rely on Joel and Tess to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of music, especially release dates, and Shazaming a song on a smartphone isn't an option, the code relies on Joel and Tess being able to look up the track in The Billboard Book.

As Ellie correctly guesses, anything played over the radio released in the '60s means Bill and Frank have no new stock, the '70s means new stock, and anything from the '80s means trouble. Ellie guesses this by telling Joel that Wham's 1984 single "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" played when he was sleeping. "Code broken," she whispers after his worried reaction.

At the close of the episode after the three have escaped the QZ, the radio begins playing Depeche Mode's 1987 track in Joel and Tess' empty apartment, which means trouble is afoot. Sadly, they've already left by the time the song is broadcast. Eep.

Mazin deserves some rope. I have confidence.

Though, this is coming from someone who thinks Chernobyl is one of the best things on TV of the last 15 or so years.

Great first episode. Kind of wish I didn't watch the "weeks to come" teaser at the end
