I saw Kevin Smith's review last night and he sucked Rian Johnson's johnson.

I fully expected this, and he "loved" the female Ghostbusters2016 movie as well....just fyi.

He said it was the director's prerogative on giving Leia, Luke, and Rey powers.

No shite, but that doesn't mean its logical given what's been presented in the Star Wars universe when it comes to the force, how its used, how you can obtain it, to what degree the force is used.

Rey was a superhero force user instantly. No training what so ever, and she resists a supposedly really powerful and somewhat trained force user named Kylo Ren. Insane. Rey struggles for none of her powers, not a single drop. If she had any struggles, it must be off screen.

He just couldn't figure out why Luke didn't actually go to the planet and fight Kylo Ren - he said it could have been epic to see Luke (win or lose) kick arse one last time - to have his kick arse older Jedi moment (like Yoda did in #3 and even Vader in Rogue One).

Yeah, the obvious one. At least he wasn't a complete coward, but obviously this guy never really calls out these big budget movies for what they are...as evidenced by his all-female ghostbusters love.

Kevin Smith has also had Rian Johnson on his podcast before I believe. It was shortly after Looper came out. So he probably doesn’t want to burn any bridge he has there, right or wrong

Smith is a super nerd. Said he cried multiple times. Pathetic.

I guess I'm in the minority that thought TLJ was fine. Far from a perfect movie, but decent enough to set the stage for moving away from the Luke/Leia/Han storylines.

Not as good as TFA, but still better than any of the prequels.

but decent enough

I could look past that it's a bad film and the SJW stuff because it's star wars, as long as there is some good stuff to enjoy

but on top of all of the structural and conceptual issues, nothing in the last jedi makes any fricking sense at all...too many things that leave the viewer going "huh? wait, what?"

that's what makes the movie so bad, is that no movie will ever have an audience with the kind of good faith a star wars movie has...everyone wants to like it, they'll lie to themselves that they like it, but it's so fricking bad you can't even do that.

The same fans that have been shitting on the franchise since ROTJ? Come on. I get some of the criticisms of TLJ, and agree some of the plot lines were lazy and sloppy, but they had to have some way to move on from Luke/Leia/Han. I give them a C in how they did it, but I've generally had low expectations for Star Wars movies since the prequels. TFA exceeded my expectation, and I loved Rogue One. TLJ was fine. Not great, and overall not terrible.

Still buying tickets, multiple viewings, toys, dvds...that’s your built in audience, but I’m also talking about the general audience. It’s like people who don’t like football but get excited for the super bowl. It’s a big event and people want it to match that...and they lie to themselves so it’s not disappointing. The same thing happened with the phantom menace

And the way they did it is by shitting all over them. This movie is a hate letter to everything Star Wars stood for. Lucas I don’t think understood what people loved the original trilogy for, but JJ and Rian do get it. JJ’s was tailor made for the fans and to check off all problems we had prequels and succeeds where the originals did. Rian gets it, but decided to give JJ and the fans the finger and subvert everything we knew and loved about Star Wars for virtue signaling bullshite.

It’s a carbon copy Star Wars movie only no one bothered to make sure the plot made any sense and then it takes these pre established characters, scenarios and concepts and not only reuses them (bad enough) but uses them for cheap shocks which also seems to be in service of making predictable things feel unpredictable. I have no problem with the ideas generally but if you’re going to take a dump on them at least do it in service to something good...this movie isn’t good; in fact, it’s awful

Why the frick does everyone keep saying this? You didn't need to destroy the entire Star Wars universe to do this. You didn't need to bring up Luke and Leia and Han at all.

This is the studios fault for starting a trilogy with Kasdan and Abrams and the hiring Rian with full autonomy and no mandate to stick with what TFA established or check with JJ and Kasdan to script write or anything.

How about just set the new trilogy 200 years in the future?

That's my biggest complaint. They really let everybody down with figuring out a way to phase out the old generation to make way for the new cast.

Luke's death completely invalidates his journey in the original trilogy.

But ok, see that’s whats so annoying about it. The entire movie is a contradiction because then Luke overshadows the protagonist at the climax of the film in a sequence that also happened to be terrible

In a New Hope, Obi-Wan's duel with Darth Vader overshadowed what Luke, Han, and Leia were doing, but I'll also say that wasn't the climax of the film.

They really didn't give Rey anything to do after she left the First Order flagship.
