Been reading Tolkien since before you were a gleam in your father's eye.

Just read the hobbit to my son cover to cover 6 months ago to prep him for the very disappointing movie.

Then...FAIL for you.

And, I'm talking about the appendices, letters, and Unfinished tales, not just the one book.
Jackass.

Once again, your attempt at insult is lacking.

What makes you think I don't own all of those.

What the heck would the other books have to do with a discussion of the Hobbit exactly?

I've read the Unfinished Tales, the appendices, and the Simarillion. But none of those have a damn thing to do with what we are discussing.

YES!

I couldn't remember how to find it, but that would have fit the scene perfectly.

Somebody posted a YouTube clip of the Red Wedding set to the Benny Hill song. Hilarious

Unlike the LoTR movies, it felt overly kiddy. I'll probably check out this new one eventually, but I'm not that excited for it.

That's how the books were. The Hobbit was a kids book

Sure, to an extent.

How heavy was the book on fart, burp, and fat jokes?

the trolls scene and the scene in Bilbo's house were both silly in the books so i'm okay with the movie version.

Nice observation. It's based on a children's book, unlike LOTR.

The funny/comical/animals talking part of the Hobbit is a big part of it. You have that aspect of middle earth in the Hobbit, then by the end of the Lord of Rings, most of that is gone, the elves are leaving, Dwarves are basically hiding away, it time for Men to basically run the show on their own. That's why the Lord of the Rings is more serious.

Basically Middle Earth is de-Narnia-ing itself over the course of the Hobbit in to the Lord of the Rings. I'd imagine the movies will take a similar path to becoming more serious.

Your love for Scrubs is only topped by you irrational love for The Hobbit.

The first can only be considered a disappointment. Not bad but also not as good as it could have been if they had kept the comic book absurd crap out of it.

I hope the second movie proves me wrong.

It was supposed to be though. The Hobbit has a really different feel than LOTR. Book wise. I don't go as far as saying its a kids book like some do, because it has it's dark moments. But it's more of an overall fun theme, not depressing like The Silmarilion and not as badass as LOTR.
