Super grateful to not be this miserable of a person.

What's miserable in wanting to see the source material faithfully adapted?

The Hobbit trilogy has some great moments.

It shouldn't be a trilogy in the 1st place. That's where they screwed up initially. Maybe 2 movies, but a 3rd was over the top.

I'd like to think that in 7+ hours of movies, there'd be at least a few 'moments'.

I endured the first 2 movies, but never will waste my time with The Battle of 5 Armies.

That epic conclusion is the shortest of the 3 movies?

Zero interest.

Hobbit, Watership Down, Secret of Nimh, Riki-Tiki-Tavi plus all of the great Saturday morning and after school cartoons

This rings true for my youth, minus Watership Down.

The animation scene at that time was interesting to say the least. I remember going to see a 3d Star Wars ripoff in the mid-80s called Starchaser - Legend Of Orrin or something similar. Highlights included 3d whips being used on slaves and a robot trying to kill some kind of fairy that had flown into its head, blowing its own head off.

Rated PG.

The Hobbit is a children's tale and should have been adapted as such. Not another epic trilogy like LOTR. It was greed and lunacy that drove the studio to try and make it into anything more than it was meant.

that’s pretty on the nose.

They wanted 3 more LOTR but that’s not the vibe of the hobbit.

It’s really a fun whimsical adventure that’s basically a kids bed time story.

One of my favorite jokes is that the LOTR Trilogy is like if EB White wrote a sequel to Stewart Little about how Stewart’s nephew killed the devil.

The scenes Jackson had to get right, he absolutely nailed them perfectly.

If you cut out the added junk that wasn't in the book, the trilogy becomes one decent movie.

During that time Disney was the big movie attraction for all the families for the drive-ins.

The only addition I liked was the Arkenstone. It made more sense that they needed Bilbo to steal that than then to just go take random stuff.

i’ve heard there is a fan edit that takes out a lot of the superfluous stuff and is pretty decent.

The Smaug scene and the Golem scene were the two I was referencing. Nailed those.

I agree but I always thought they should have had the gold near Smaug's head (where he slept) somewhat melted. Would have been a nice touch...

You have me wanting to buy North Shore with Nia Peeples

One of my guilty pleasure movies. I own it on DVD.

It sets next to two of my others: The Warriors and Tuff Turf.

The look of Gollum always freaked me out in the cartoon movie

Definitely a wild looking Gollum. It's a great movie but after having Serkis do Gollum, whoever voiced the animated Gollum just doesn't sound right. An overall better adaption of the book though.

Rankin and Bass were experts at that sort of thing. And the cast was no joke, either. Two of the best "acting" directors, not named Clint Eastwood or Sydney Pollack were in the cast.

And I say that as no slight towards Peter Jackson. His adaptation of LOTR is likely to be the Gold Standard of how to adapt voluminous, lore-rich written material to the screen for the rest of time.

But, that Hobbit bullshite was utter rubbish.

Pretty much. We had HBO/SHO/MAX all pretty early, so I'd add The Last Unicorn, Heavy Metal and Wizards to this list.
