They wouldn't be able to get everybody off their phones posting their tik toks and IGs. They all be much more worried about how they looked. It's really kind of impressive that they were willing to just leave the AMAs, forget the party, and go to work.

It was also cool how Lionel Richie basically told Prince to frick off when he said he wanted a guitar solo and wanted to come record it in a room by himself and not be a part of the group. I loved Quincy Jones saying "He wants a guitar solo, but that's not what we're doing here..."

Here's Prince's song "Hello" which loosely addresses the criticism he faced for not participating.

[Verse 1]
I tried to tell them that I didn't want to sing
But I'd gladly write a song instead
They said okay, and everything was cool
Till a camera tried to get in my bed

[Refrain]
Hello, my bed, hello, hello

....We're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
There's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try to understand
A flower that has water will grow
And the child misunderstood will go

Then Prince eventually donated his "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" song to We Are The World/Live Aid

It comes up way short. Prince missed out on an epic collaboration with some of his admitted heroes, like Stevie Wonder & Ray Charles.

If anybody wants a deeper dive, here's the 1-hour official documentary of all the studio footage they filmed & released on VHS:

Interesting to see Dan Aykroyd there.

There were a lot of good musicians and singers in the room, but only a few of them had their careers chronicled in a major motion picture.

I don’t think we have many truly great vocalists anymore

As much as I dislike music for pretty much the past 20 something years, I don’t think vocal talent is the problem. In my opinion it’s more of a creativity problem.
You can find singers who can replicate some of the greatest ever, but how many people can create the song from scratch?

Really enjoyed the documentary.

I always liked the song when I was a kid. I was 4 when it came out.
The diversity of voices and music styles combined into are cool.
Everyone crushed their part.

It’s kind of fun to think about the combination they had in the studio.
You have Michael Jackson and Waylon Jennings in the same studio. Singing the same song. There’s Cyndi Lauper and Willie Nelson, singing the same song. And it works.

So out of all of the artists featured in the song, who is the biggest star at the time of this recording?

Watched last night and thought it was great. The fact that many stars could come together (after an awards show), stick it out, and it wasn’t a complete disaster speaks volumes to the professionalism and character of everyone involved.

Stevie Wonder seems awesome. Just 0 fricks given by that guy. strolls in 3 weeks later wanting to help write and then clowning around during the recording.

I'd definitely say Michael Jackson. He was just coming off of the Thriller album.

yeah Michael was the biggest name on the planet at that time.
Springsteen was pretty much at his popularity peak and was massive also.

while Ray Charles and Bob Dylan were no longer on the top of the world, you could tell that they were revered even by that huge group of stars.

Cyndi Lauper's fame only burned at its brightest for a brief moment, but at that time she was right on Madonna's arse in popularity.

I was shocked as well as she seemed the most disinterest and burnt out as the night went on…then when it was her turn she f’ing brought it. Almost made me laugh out loud.

I couldn’t tell if Dylan was just a weirdo, socially awkward dude or tripping on some drug.

What’s the backstory on John Denver?

Dianna Ross asking for Daryl Hall's autograph was pretty cool.

Steve Perry probably was the best vocalist at that recording session. His range is phenomenal.

Lionel Richie freaked out by MJ's snake was hilarious. MJ was one talent individual that was screwed up from being a child star. I was 10 during this timeframe and MJ was the biggest name at the time.

WATW came about because a bunch of white guys did "Do they Know it's Christmas" and Belanfonte couldn't believe black people weren't helping other black people.

WATW was specifically targeted to the victims of the famine in Ethiopia, which had resulted in the deaths of a million Ethiopians (out of a population of 40 million) by 1985 when the song was recorded

back then Ethiopia was the world’s 24th most populous country, accounting for .8% of the total global population of 4.9 billion

39 years later, the planet’s occupants have nearly doubled to 8.1 billion - but Ethiopia has more than tripled, to 129 million, making it the 11th most populous nation and 1.6% of the global total

and their median age is 19

great job, guys

Denver was championing hunger and aid well before it was “cool.” His popularity had dropped a little by 1985. But he was snubbed because supposedly his sound didnt mesh with their vision of the song.

MJ was the Taylor Swift of his time....just no social media then.

Cindi Lauper was the biggest female on there during this time.
