I asked ChatGPT to consider adjusted box office, number of films, awards, and overall impact on the industry.

It suggested names like Hepburn, Sam Jackson, Harrison Ford, and others… but ultimately …

?? Conclusion

While each of these actors has made indelible contributions to cinema, Tom Cruise stands out for his combination of box office dominance, enduring star power, and influence on the industry. His commitment to performing his own stunts and revitalizing the theatrical experience has left a lasting legacy

I think you make a good case for Cruise. And others make a good case for Hanks.

As for me, before clicking on the thread, the name that popped into my head was Jimmy Stewart.

For pure movie star power there is no contest to Tom Cruise.

He’s Hollywood’s #1 promoter of getting people to the theaters.

He put off the Top Gun sequel for 30 years because he didn’t want to be typecast. Then look at his body of work after that.

Has there ever been another run of movies over as long as span of time featuring the same lead (and most of the supporting cast) as the MI series?

People keep bringing up… “ok so he has a weird personal life.” Regardless of what you think, or don’t think, about it you just don’t hear about anyone else’s personal life as much. So I don’t think that’s a really fair statement to make, nor should it matter.

Every interview I see him in he praises others and is very gracious. Whenever someone else being interviewed is asked how it is working with him, it’s overwhelmingly positive…. They say he’s driven, just being around him makes them want to do better, and he’s very generous.

Most recently, Pom Klementieff was asked about Tom. Said she expressed interest in skydiving after MI7, and she asked if he recommended a place for lessons. He said let me look into it. Next day he called her and gifted her 25 or so lessons, enough to get her license. She’s now had 200 jumps, and at the end of her lessons Tom and friends just hung out and jumped with her, then he flew his own plane back home afterwards

Tom Cruise is not only the greatest movie star of all time, but he very well may be the last of his kind.

If you say a certain actor is the GOAT put up his 3 best movies, and see how they stack up against another actors best 3.

IMO, what makes an actor "great" is when he becomes the character on screen and you don't identify him as the actor. With Tom Cruise, I still see "Tom Cruise" and not the character. The only movie I see the Character in a Tom Cruise fil is "Maverick" in Top Gun.

People like Harrison Ford, Jimmy Stewart, Denzel, Gene Hackman become the characters they portray.

I keep seeing Hanks brought up.

Instead of comparing works, let’s look at it another way.

Hypothetically, there are two new movies coming out and you know nothing about them, not even the titles. All you know is Cruise is in one, and Hanks the other. You are told you have a choice to see one movie and not the other. One stars Cruise and the other Hanks… which would you choose?

I think most people would say Cruise. That’s movie star power.

Amazing actor. Maybe the greatest.

But my idea of movie star is : damn I gotta see that in theaters.

Tom may not have the range of a DDL or a Deniro, Pacino, etc….

But just about everyone of his movies was something I wanted to experience.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I just don’t ever see myself saying “oh I can’t wait for that DDL movie to release so I can hit the theaters.”

I’m thinking that most folks in here didn’t live during the most recent previous age of stars. And if I lived in the 40’s I’d have a better understanding of that era. Or the silent era when Chaplin ruled the world. Crowning Cruise when even he would admit that his idols were bigger stars is a bit weird.

I agree, I was torn to even make that post about DDL because I do consider him possibly the best actor but not movie star. I just felt he needed a mention is all. Maybe a thread about best actor of all time is needed
