We laugh. but if the production values are high that might end up as one of the highest grossing films internationally of all time.

Oh sweet Jesus. This might be the worst case of Whitewashing since "The Last Airbender". How are they going to defend a white guy being in 10th Century China? There was no trade between Europe and China at this time. At least make it at a time (like say when the Silk Road was open) that a white guy could have been there. Yeah I know this is over-the-top fantasy, but this is the most ridiculous whitewashing in many years.

And the dragons... to anyone who understands how the Chinese culture feels about dragons, this is fricking hilarious.

Directed by Zhang Yimou, produced entirely in China by a Chinese Company. Obviously they're not worried about whitewashing.

But the concept itself is just so ridiculously anti-Chinese mindset. The Chinese perception of dragons are wish granters, symbols of luck, and are associated with water and wind to bring rain to water crops. It would be like doing a movie set in Medieval Europe fighting against God-like loving genies with an Asian guy leading the charge against them. From the Chinese perception of dragons, they may as well name them something entirely different.

The most ridiculous part of this isn't the monsters, it's Matt Damon.

Its the most expensive movie ever produced by a Chinese company and its all in English. Obviously they made it more for the American audience. I'm sure the Chinese people will still see it as well.

I'm aware, but I've worked in Chinese entertainment, and its influence on our film culture is awful. All the Chinese market does is water down our own entertainment to be as stupid and safe as possible. Thanks to China, filmmakers are now heavily pressured to not make anything controversial. They are told that any big budget movie needs a black and white mindset which the Chinese like. They do not appreciate moral relativity as a culture.

This. Though Matt Damon being in this really fricks it up. I couldn't get over that watching the trailer. I hope he has one hell of a back story.
