The Food that Built America is a wonderful new series on History Channel chronicling the backstories of our nation’s favorite fast food joints. Historical footage is paired with spectacular, real-life dramatizations of pivotal moments in the industry’s beginnings.

The episode focusing on the genesis of Pizza Hut is especially stellar. It’s a real joy to watch second-rate actors in fake mustaches (think Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” video) make two guys eating pizza appear every bit as dramatic as Walt and Hank’s final confrontation on Breaking Bad. These B-level actors are so over the top, it’s hilarious. The sets and props are just as uproarious; a character chugs a bottle with a white label that simply reads, “Irish Whiskey.” You’ll learn a lot from this series and have a great time watching it.

I've also enjoyed them but I do find it odd that almost every story line involves brothers fighting over the business.

The episodes have been great, I love History of influential products and ideas that goes largely unknown.

The Podcast if like a condensed version of the show, and drops every Thursday.

I caught the episode regarding Hershey vs. Reese vs. the guy who came up with Baby Ruth and Butter Finger the other morning. Pretty damn interesting.

In a time where “appointment television” rarely exists, this has been appointment tv for me each week. I love these kind of shows. I really wish History Channel would focus on actual history instead of all the reality crap they air.

Right there with you. This is the only thing on tv I look forward to. I also wish they would get back to the history stuff. Our society has reality tv overload.

Right along with that the story of Post. Man, that guy seemed like a piece of shite. His daughter seems ok, though.

It sounds a lot like "The Men Who Built America". Great topic, but the dramatizations were so damn cheesey. It was like they were trying their hardest to turn men like Carnegie and Rockefeller into action heroes or something.

If it's history, I'll take what I can get, though.

Anyone see the irony involving Dominoe’s? The one brother left the business with only the VW delivery car because the other brother stopped making sandwiches. Now they are aggressively advertising sandwiches.

Where would the snack food industry be without WW1 and WW2?

Truth. The Depression, as well. Throw some nuts in chocolate and call it a meal replacement.

And God bless Kraft for what he did with cheese.

I listen to an old radio show from the 40s that was sponsored by Kraft. One year during WW2, Mr Kraft gave an Easter speech during a broadcast that was pretty moving.

Not sure why, but it was hard to wrap my brain around the fact that the founder of Kraft was alive and well in the 1940s...and a box of Kraft Dinner would only set you back "3 red ration points" in 1942.

Very similar format. Same producers, I'm sure.

The dramatizations are a bit of a turn off, but once I get into them it's ok.

We have nothing on Germans in that regard. Puma and Adidas started by brothers who hate each other.
Aldi and Trader Joes...
