Yeah, that's what I thought---that maybe LEO was deliberately deciding to have the labotomy so he could rid himself of the guilt and misery. Not sure though.

I think yall might be on to something.
Remember after he says the line about living as a monster and he's walkin away goin to have his lebotomy, Ruffalo yells "teddy!" and dicaprio doesn't turn around. Well if he really thought he was teddy, then he might turn around.
That could be the biggest twist of all!! frick! I'm gonna have to go see it again!

But at some point he really was delusional about being Teddy, hence all the hallucinations and delusions. I think maybe at the end he was cured but couldn't shake the memories and guilt and didn't want to face going back into the real world.
What I'm not sure about was if they were actually going to give him a labotomy at he very end as he was walking off. I think they were.

Liked it, but just as a pet peeve, I hate movies where the director/script lets the viewer "make the ending for himself"
Seems like a cop out, been a second since I read the novel but I remember it being a lot more clear cut on the ending

I would love to hear from someone who has a fresh memory of the novel and can tell us if it is definitive if he was pretending to not be cured at the end to avoid going back to the real world and if they gave him the labotomy at the end.

Ryno,
you think you will go see it again?

it is my understanding that when he said... "is it better to die a good man than to live as a monster" or whatever.... that he was aware of who he was and what he had done, but chose to have the lobotomy. is this what we are meant to think?
that's the way i took it as well.

not at the theatre. I rarely go see movies at the theatre. I'll watch it again maybe when it comes out on video. not sure this is the kind of movie that lend itself to multiple viewings, other than trying to spot more clues and hints along the way.
Again, I don't think the film hinged on the "twist" at all. i think the film was all about the style adn genre made famous by Alfred Hitchock. Pulp Suspense.

Just got back from seeing the film. Thought it was outstanding.
Like Ryno, and a few others, I was expecting the double twist at the end. I was definitely satisfied with the ending, even though I kind of knew what was going to occur. Someone spoiled it for me a few days ago, telling me to think "Metal Gear Solid 2" - so, I went into the film expecting "Teddy" to be the victim of a simulation.
Which is what ultimately occurred.
However, even at the end, I was still completely enthralled. The film does a great job at the end of throwing you into Teddy's shoes - you don't know what to believe, and are trying to make sense of everything, as is Teddy (or Andrew...).
One question I do have though - did the film ever provide a reason why his wife drowned their 3 kids, other than the fact that she had a severe mental illness (Bipolar Disorder...)?

"Is it better to die a good man, or live as a monster? "
...and add that to Dr. Shian's reaction, "TEDDY?!"
I didn't think there was any question that he wasn't crazy and finally let Delores go. She was the one that "kept the tape running over and over." But he knew that he wasn't leaving the island. He was there for murder. Remember, the whole idea of the dr's letting him have the run of the place for 2 days was to prove that their project/theories would work. Not for him to go anywhere. He was with the criminally insane on an island. You're basically living like a monster. He knows he's a good man.
I also thought the line "they're not smarter than us, Chuck." was interesting.

Here's a couple questions maybe someone can help out with....
Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) said, "why all wet baby?" in a creepy kind of homo way when Teddy busts into the top of the lighthouse. What was up with that?
So is it clear that Leo killed his 3 kids and his wife? Or did his wife kill the kids and Leo kill her like in the flashback?

Because Kingsley had to deal with hearing Leo talk to his wife for 24 months. Thats a direct line from Leo.

Did the ending surprise you?
Well, I had read the book several years back.
quote:
Did you think he was going to end up being Teddy or Andrew?
I don't think I ever really decided whether he was one character or the other. With MPD, one is essentially both, but not at the same time.

Dicaprio rocked
. The movie was great, was not expecting the ending at all, but thought it ended great. Whole movie was well done, that's what I love about Scorcese.

I liked it but I don't like the way they described the movie through the previews. I never read the book or knew about it before so I thought it was going to be like a horror kinda movie.

Yeah, I was expecting more suspense. But I was into the movie the whole way through, no slow parts really.

I couldn't remember at the end was he actually a ww2 vet or was that apart of his fake imagination.

This movie is quit possibly the worst thing I have seen in a couple of years. Slow does not even begin to describe it. It was horrible. As far as the ending goes, I figured it out within the 30 minutes and then ended up falling asleep for the next 20 minutes
