Finished watching The Crown (all 4 seasons) last night. No doubt in my mind that the Royal Family had Diana killed. They might not have caused the accident that killed her, but they were on their way to getting rid of her so Charles could be remarried and still inline to be king one day.

If it was the 1940's - of which you're obviously influenced, maybe.

But by the 90's, royals were sort of out so to speak and despite ceremony and public appearances nobody cared anymore about affairs or divorce.

Is it supposed to be a true life retelling of Elizabeth and real family events? The wife was talking about wanting to see it and I assumed it was another downton abbey.

You got that impression from Season 4, because I sure didn’t. Both Margaret and Anne tried to stop the marriage because they knew that Charles was in love with Camilla. Even after he married Diana, they tried to talk to some sense into him, as did his father. Finally, his mother told him to grow up and stop acting like a spoiled brat. Diana might not have meshed well with the royal family, but nothing in the series so far even remotely implies that they wanted her dead.

Correct! And it appears that if Charles would have acted even a little as he should have, Diana would have been fine. The Royals wanted a proper princess and she would have acted that way. Charles was an arse! It seemed pretty obvious at the time that he was an arse, as well. Just go back and read the phone transcripts from his convos with Camilla while married to Diana. Charles never even tried.

To Kywild, It's not a documentary, but a docu drama. They take a lot of historically accurate info, interviews, etc. and create the story out of it. So not completely true, but a good bit is. The Thatcher trip to Balmoral is true, but the hunting of the stag probably is not.

The royal family were the ones who wanted her in the first place. Charles was simply in love with someone else.

They take real events and make them more interesting/dramatic than they actually were. It’s worth watching.

It’s a really amazing show. The filmmaking doesn’t get enough credit. This is beautifully shot amd edited.

The episode where Churchill gets his portrait painted is an amazing piece of acting by Lithgow and Stephen Dillane.

It’s really rewatchable too... I find myself putting it on often at night before bed.

Fantastic series. I think the best acting so far has been Claire Foy as the Queen in Seasons 1 and 2. Hard to see anyone topping that in Seasons 5 and 6.

Emma Corrin is a close second with Diana. If you go back and look at footage of Diana its almost identical mannerisms and the accent is almost spot on.

Tobias Menzies as Philip has been my favorite performance. It’s difficult to find a bad performance in the whole series.

Yes, she was phenomenal. Josh O’Connor’s portrayal of Charles and Olivia Colman as a middle aged Queen is up there as well.

I don't think the royals realized how popular Diana would become with the public. IIRC they didn't realize that she was the "People's Princess" until after she died, so they couldn't just dismiss her as Charles' ex-wife. Not only was she extremely popular, she was the mother of a future king. It was evident that she was far more popular than Charles could ever hope to be. I wonder if this last season of the Crown has dredged up hard feelings for Charles. I think public opinion of he and Camilla had been gradually improving.

Yes, on both counts.

A show needs a good villain and this season that was poor Charles. By all neutral accounts he was fairly nice guy stuck in a loveless marriage. Not a tremendous amount of character perhaps but not a bad guy.

You also need a hero or heroine and Princess Diana is super beloved, particularly since time has passed and folks have tended to forget that Di could be supremely obnoxious.

I'm not saying Di was the villain and Charles the hero, I'm saying they were two people trapped in a loveless marriage that they both brought a ton of baggage too and it all played out in the public eye.

To make matters worse, poor Charles is still kicking around waiting for his beloved mother to die and once he gets the Crown he has to know he's just a placeholder until his beloved son gets the throne.

Di has been deader than disco for a while so the rough edges have been smoothed off.

Not sure where you might have picked that up from the show.
Hell, Elizabeth basically tells Charles to grow the f up, have some balls, and be an adult.

There is obviously some contempt for Diana's popularity by several of the royals, but not to the level of "Let's have her killed."

I think paparazzi and a drunk limo driver may have had more to do with it.

Charles would still be in line to be king no matter what, as he currently is.

He is unlikely to remain monarch for long, though. Elizabeth is a tough old bird and I don't think she's dying anytime soon. Bet she lasts another 10 years or so. Charles won't be far behind, then it's William's turn

So you literally contradict yourself in the same post.

They didn't want a divorce. They didn't want scandal. It was pretty clear that everyone thought behind the scenes that Charles needed to grow the frick up and fulfill his obligations.

Agreed. I am particularly fond of Charles Dance. Excellent in his role.
