re: The Chosen - Who's caught up and what's the board's opinion on the series?

I really like the series and it’s been very fruitful for biblical faith discussions. There are some parts that I’m not a fan of, but some are done extremely well.
I mostly am disappointed that certain gospel events are omitted, and mostly for no good reason that I can tell.
Two big omissions:
1) The "Bread of Life" discourse in Galilee, specifically starting around John 6:51-58. He declares, "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you"
2) The Transfiguration. I think this scene would have been a powerful backstop for your concern ( “but I do wonder if the show would leave a young mind to think like the Jews do that Jesus was just another prophet out of many.”)
Three more important omissions:
1) The story Zacchaeus the wealthy tax collector (Jesus tells him to gice away half of everything he owns.)
2) The story of the rich disciple. (He has followed all the laws of Moses, and Jesus calls him to be a disciple but to give away all he owns first.)
3) The women caught in adultery.

JESUS is a warrior. He did this and much more.

Just out of curiosity, how would you know what’s wrong/right if you’ve never seen it? I assume you’ve read articles or watched videos that explain it. I’m wanting to know what they are.

Mrs M and I have liked it and haven’t had any big problems with expanded storylines or character development.
My only beef was the Thomas’s wife scenario which in my opinion dragged down the overall narrative and detracted from Lazarus.
The portrayal of Jesus as far as an actor can take it has been excellent.
I haven’t had too many concerns over the years with the deity of Jesus. It’s his humanity that has, at times, been hard to get my head around.
The show has helped a lot with that.

The Chosen has been 1 of my favorite shows since I heard about it from a friend. It was either S2 or 3. Both of us are Catholic, not that it matters.
Its a must watch for me and I did rewatch the entire seasons when the last season came out.
Would do the theatre but 3 episodes is a lot for my schedule

Matthew in the show? I don’t think he was the type to “break fingers”.
Definitely not. However, I do like how they are attempting to humanize Christ and the Apostles in the show. The gospel authors were simply trying to convey the what and the how in their writings. You don't get any sense of personality, save in a few instances here and there. Peter likely had a sense of humor but we only know this because he is recorded to have made a joke about being drunk in the Acts of the Apostles ("We're not drunk; it's only nine o'clock in the morning!").

Like what? Please be detailed in your answer. Of course, having admitted to not watching the show, I'm curious as to how you come to the conclusion that it gets a number of things wrong in scripture. Wouldn't you first have to watch it to come to that conclusion?

you didn't reply to me, but my wife noticed something after Jesus rides into the temple on a donkey.
according to Mark 11:11 (NIV) states: "Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve."
but if i recall correctly, the show has them staying in Jerusalem.

I think this is the Nicodemus storyline.
That scene with him leaving them money for the journey but not being strong enough to follow them is great. Eric Avari is an awesome actor.

It’s good but I am not a fan of them making Christ out to be so sarcastic, at least in the modern sense. Obviously Jesus spoke in parables and metaphors a lot but it was an interesting creative touch to have him make snarky comebacks at the Jewish priests.

I’ve watched a couple episodes here and there and really enjoyed it. I want to go back and rewatch the whole series in order.
It’s well acted, a little slow but deliberately paced, excellent set design and costumes that feel authentic and lived in. It really does all of the little things, that most modern period dramas get wrong, really well.

That was a great storyline! And Yes, Avari really elevated the early episodes! His acting was a step above most of the cast.
I’d never considered that they made Nicodemus in the rich disciple episode. That’s cool and an interesting take!

I think it does a great job at humanizing Jesus and bringing that aspect of his being to light
I think as a child you grow up hearing about how Jesus was both fully man and fully divine, but when you learn and hear the stories you picture him more towards that divine nature, Almost like a flawless holy robot that only preached and performed miracles
This show does a good job of making Jesus more relatable to the normal person with normal human emotions and normal human nature, which if we are to believe he was fully human, is important. So the show shines a spotlight more on his human nature which is something we know little about but must assume is present. I think it is beneficial in that sense even if it does take some liberties

No, that is not the message I got. Just to me growing up it was just more mystical, and now I see it the way Jesus and his followers did. I find it strengthens my faith. I like that I can follow along, and know what happens next and imagine myself in their footsteps. I do wonder if it is just entertainment to a young child like any other movie? Scenes like walking on water, and Lazarus coming out of the tomb seem just too much for man to portray in a movie. I'm sure I am wrong, but I still wonder.

I do think some of what's done is for expediency of time. He DID send the women on to Bethany, if I recall correctly.

Not if they are watching the same show I am.

My children have had children’s bibles since birth.
But it wasn’t until I found a graphic novel version that the message resonated with my oldest. She immediately started asking questions about what something meant or whatever but it was triggered by presenting it in a format that resonated with them.
The chosen isn’t really meant as a full documentary version of the New Testament exactly IMO: it’s creating a dramatic, compelling and visual narrative of the biblical text.
I don’t think it should be used as the full extent and basis of someone’s faith, but as something that leads people to faith or gives them a new involvement with it if that makes sense and more very glad it exists.
