I can't remember. Does Oleg know Stan and Philip are best friends and nextdoor neighbors? Does Phillip know Stan and Oleg are friends?

I don't remember every detail from past seasons but based on Arkady conversation with Oleg that Arkady had met Phillip, and only once.

Also, Phillip and Oleg's conversation about loving DC at this time of the year/loving it when the cherry blossoms bloom was code to confirm who they were meeting.

So, to answer your question: No, I don't think Oleg/Stan/Phillip know about their relationships with one another.

TBH him keeping her college ID was a total dick move.

Pretty rapey, actually. That guy was bad news, like Ted Bundy bad news.

Was he definitely keeping it just to force a date or was going to check her out for security?

It was definitely for a date, but Elizabeth didn't want to risk it. I also think part of of her just wanted to frick up an American soldier who messed with her daughter's psyche.

I didn't read any previews about the season so I had no clue that they jumped 2-3 years in the timeline before watching this episode. I assume it was 1984 or so last year.

I loved the ways they introduced the time change, from Arkady saying he had talked to a man who had left Directorate S several years ago to Philip driving up to Henry's boarding school hockey game. I wonder what happened to convince them to send Henry to that boarding school.

I love the way they positioned all of the Russians in two camps, either as pro Western reform, Gorbachev supporters like Philip, Oleg, and Arkady or as hard line anti-West communists. It will be interesting to see if Elizabeth goes against her natural ideology.

Also Oleg always struck me as the kind of guy who would truly flourish in early 90s Russia. He even looks like Mikhail Prokorhov

I don’t know, he seemed kinda serious, like some dbag trying to force a date would have seemed more aloof or something. One of the things I love about this show is the way they keep things vague.

Was extremely risky for Elizabeth to kill him like that on the street, several people could have seen her, to just do it because he spooked her little girl.

There was nothing vague about it at all. It was a total Ted Bundy routine. The guy had no authority to be asking Paige anything.

Season 5 ended around the end of 1984. Last night's episode was set in October 1987. Claudia mentioned that the summit (which happened in December 87) was in nine weeks. I listened to a podcast this morning that had the shows producers on it. They said they chose 1987 in part because by the reforms and such by Gorbechev (glasnost, etc) had started to take effect.

I’m not familiar with Ted Bumdy’s mo, but I doubt that’s what the show had in mind, maybe he’s a creeper try to score some poon. but maybe he’s a naval security guy in an area near the Naval Observatory and some embassies during a major summit with the USSR and saw some one suspicious out of what we know and the other lady with Elizabeth even commented on, is a young, inexperienced agent

I thought it was the people from his office.

The camera sure lingered a lot on the brunette who had to drag her lame arse husband to the floor to dance. Just sayin' ...

Obviously, I had no idea where the show was going, although I did know they were skipping ahead to 1987. And it also was obvious there would be a major conflict between Philip and Elizabeth that would drive the show's resolution.

That said ...

It is an incredible plot device to literally have them working against each other - perhaps even without Elizabeth knowing -- and each for different Russian factions. That is downright fan-fricking-tastic.

Bundy used to pretend to be police and other authority figures to gain trust and power over his soon-to-be victims. This naval guy asked for a second form of ID after checking her out, because any normal person would call the cops if someone confiscated their driver's license, and he wanted to force her into a date.

He had no authority to be questioning people on the street.

I'm not saying naval guy was going to kill Paige and have sex with her corpse, but he was a creep through and through, and I can't believe there's any doubt about what he was doing. He wouldn't have tapped on an old man's car window, that's for damn sure.

1. Great first episode
2. I just realized I’ll be traveling and will miss the last two episodes.

Definitely in the running for the best current show on TV. They absolutely nail it.

Love the way they use period music.

Holy shite, I'm bummed this is the last season.

I seem to remember from one of the season previews, Stan is show at a crime scene with a dead person lying face down. That would be an easy way to get him onto Elizabeth's trail, even though he's no longer in FBI counterintelligence. Plus, remember Elizabeth used the same method to dispatch the last guy coming after Paige and she likely did it with some others. Stan is going to be after a "serial" killer.

And surely Dennis remembers that tiny woman who kicked his and his partner's arse a while back. I need to go back and watch that dinner party to see if Elizabeth looked at him funny.

I was looking for that as well, but I didn't notice anything. The only time she looked suspicious was when she overheard Dennis's wife and Stan's gf.
