From ‘The Room’ to ‘Eraserhead’ to ‘Rocky Horror,’ these are the best movies to ever inspire deep obsession

“Making a list of movies that seem underrated or underappreciated is one thing; accounting for the ones that generate religious fervor is another,” Adam Nayman writes in this history of the cult movie. “Cult films come in all varieties—and sometimes with vigorous debate about their status attached—but genuine, possessive devotion is the baseline.”

If these are the qualifications then Star Wars and The Dark Knight have to be the top two.

Some of these are not Cult movies, they're just great movies.
The Thing? A cult movie? How about a mainstream great movie. I mean this list has The Thing on the same list as The Room and spots ranked below. That list is bizarre and that's just one example.

While a major studio release, The Thing was a box office disappointment. It didn’t really find any life until home video release.
A movie that is relatively obscure (I doubt you’ll find that many people in the general population who has actually seen it) and developed a loyal following in home video qualifies as a cult film.

There also has to be an element of niche.

Roadhouse isn’t on the list?

It's on a separate list with The Godfather, Citizen Kane, and Schindler's List.

From the article:
quote:
(1) were not successful at the box office, (2) were not widely and initially praised by critics, and (3) gained popularity only after they left theaters, whether by word of mouth, midnight screenings, or home-video success.
The Thing hits all three qualifiers. And the rankings of this list aren't really indicative of quality of movie, so it being "below" The Room has more to do with some people's fervor for The Room, as this list was voted on by staff writers of The Ringer.
Curius what other examples of mainstream successes you see on there. Every studio movie I noticed was a massive flop. If anything, I thought the list was pretty basic. The order is interesting, but there are no inclusions that raise my eyebrows.

Fanboys
I've met one person in my entire life who enjoyed this movie. I think the list is pretty good about not including movies like this--movies that so nakedly attempted to be cult successes.

Napoleon Dynamite
I recall this doing pretty well in theaters, I know I saw it theatrically. I know it was a quirky, low-budget indie that seems like it would be a cult film, but I thought it went mainstream shortly after release.
ETA: It grossed $46m in theaters.

It started cult, starting with a small number of screens and initially fading out. Then, it weirdly caught fire, found an audience, and ended up running in theaters far longer than any other movie I can remember (I was a teen when it came out). It was an absolute cultural phenomenon that I couldn’t stand.

GOAT theater experience. Been to close to double digit midnight screenings and no matter what city I see it in, the crowd always brings it.

The Crow, maybe? Maybe it was too successful to be considered a cult hit. But I do remember they brought it back to movie theatres a year or so after its original release to capitalize on the increased popularity it picked up after it's initial theatre run.
