Making a “future war” sequel with Christian Bale as John Connor didn’t do it.
The future war was their best chance at making a new Terminator movie work. But the story was pretty terrible, and they added unnecessary dimensions to the mythos.
These movies keep failing because they keep doing the exact opposite of what the fans would want.
Honestly, T3 (which seems to be mostly left out of that article) story wasn’t that bad. There was a lot of potential for a good movie there. Bad casting, poor execution, and throwing in silly slapstick elements hurt it.
All of these other movies just try to further convolute the story/timeline and it just doesn’t work because it adds absolutely nothing to the original story.

And lastly, you need to clear the stage for these new characters.
Nobody wants this.
Not in Star Wars, not in Terminator, not in any famous franchise.
Nobody wants their favorite franchise to take the characters that built the franchise and toss them all unceremoniously in the garbage
Imagine if they try to reboot Harry Potter in 15 years and in the first movie they kill off Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
It's like at no point in their decision making does anyone ask if the fans of the franchise will actually enjoy it.

T3 had good action scenes and a great ending.

I agree. Every time I think about it, with the right cast and just a few adjustments to the tone, it could’ve been a damn good Terminator movie.

I really don't understand why one would think its a good idea. Youre killing your cash cow, and trying to rebuild it around someone else, when there is no need to. You already have someone people love, youre just making more work for yourself trying to make the audience love someone new
Posted on 11/2/19 at 3:02 pm to thatguy45
They had to get rid of the evil white male and replace him with a strong Mexican woman, and make Border Patrol a bad guy too of course.

It wasn’t bad and it wasn’t great either.

Ehh. John Connor's been somebody new(character and actor-wise) in all Terminator movies. He was the bad guy in the last movie. Bale's warrior JC didn't really blow anyone's mind either.

Movie was no better or worse than all the other terminators after 2 imo.
Extremely forgettable

It is so damn easy, it is now 2020. Yes Judgement day is avoid, but you know what? That just gave more time for the humans. Kind of like delaying the inevitable.
So what SHOULD have happen if anything at all, is John Connor passing the torch onto the NEXT savior of mankind of WHATEVER skin color and ethnicity.
My idea is to have a Terminator goes back into the past to kill the next savior of mainkind but since John is NOT in that loop, that Sky net never realized there was a John Connor.
John Connor could have trained up the next savior and died before the second Judgement day happened. It would have been the passing of the torch but nope. Nada.
That’s almost exactly what they did minus John being the one to “pass the torch”

Yes, and if they have had John pass the torch, be the one who takes up Linda Hamilton role, then it might have actually worked out. But they DIDn't they killed him off. He is a big part of the Mythos. To say he got shot like a street rat? Yeah no.
He's John Mother fricking Connor, put some fricking respect on his name.

If Edward Furlong could carry Linda Hamilton’s jock then maybe, but he can’t. They only made this movie because she came back.
Plus you have to have Arnold who a) has to be a good guy and b) has to have been in the past awhile to explain his aging. How does that work? When you think about it there’s really no other reasonable way to do it. For all intents an purposes he’s the one taking the spot that would have gone to John. You can’t have him plus John plus Sarah plus whoever the resistance sent back plus the new target. It’s too much. Of all those John is actually the most expendable under the circumstances.

The problem is they’re sitting on this IP & feel they have to monetize it. Between the failed previous attempts and having to have Arnold in it and be a good guy really limits what you can really do.
The more I think about it the more clear it is that they almost kind of had to get rid of John to make the movie. Which is of course ridiculous and proof positive that there shouldn’t be any more Terminator movies. But it’s a valuable IP so here we are. It again once you get through that past that part it’s a fairly solid Terminator movie

Arnold doesn't have to be a Terminator though. Could make him the guy they base the model on. Deaging tech is big now so its fairly easy to explain how they used him for the model. In fact before anything about the movie was revealed, that was the rumor for who Arnold was playing
No. The movie is just T3 all over again.
>Judgement day is inevitable
>Terminator is chasing chosen one
>Chosen one must live.
T3 was a rehash of the first two, but it did have the new idea (at the time) that judgement day couldn't be stopped.
Here they steal that idea. Only thing original in this movie is them killing John for the edge factor. Easily coulda had him just slide into the role against this new AI since that's what he was trained for and make the same movie. Its dumb.
Honestly they missed out an opportunity to show John after hes seen the high point in his life. Wouldn't even need a protector for him necessarily, since hes supposed to be the savior of mankind have him fight this new terminator on his own. Would be a little different from past films in that respect, as there is no one coming to rescue him. He is the chosen one, he's gotta do it alone to prove it, and have him uncover the source of this new Skynet as he's on the run.
Not the best movie ever but would at least be something slightly different in that the one who has to survive has to fight from the beginning

I think the 1st terminator was great. I don’t really like the T2 idea of “Hey, they actually sent two terminators back in time,” but the rest of the movie is so damn good that I can certainly forgive that. I think they should have stopped there and used the ending of John as a senator who is on a trajectory for the presidency.
That said, I can tolerate T3 and its message that Judgment Day is inevitable. Everything after that has been pure shite, though, and shouldn’t have been made.

He doesn't. But that would require them to do something thats actually different.
The movie is as I said a rehash with nothing new except their edginess by killing John when he's a kid. That's it
There's still an old t800.
There's still a deadly AI,
there's still a future war,
theres still a chosen one,
judgement day is still inevitable,
Chosen one is still trained for the future,
The protector from the future still dies
Arnold even kills the other terminator with a power cell and sacraficers himself again
May as well have had John just be the hero still, because nothing new is done.
The rev 9 is this personified. They can't come up with a new terminator so what do they do? Combine the 800 with the 1000 to continue the mash up of greatest hits
For a movie trying to do something different it fails miserably

Which they tried in both 4 and 5 to miserable results. There was no way in hell they were going to do that again.

The value goes down with every bomb of a movie they keep putting out. If they really have to keep the franchise going move it to video games or do a series on one of the streaming services.
The Ghostbusters game a few years ago continued the story and was well received. Its amazing Terminator doesn't have more games because this series really lends itself to that. The Sarah Conner Chronicles was a great show and Netflix and Amazon are throwing money around right now. HBO's new service will be interested too.
