I am sure there was pressure to allow Ben to live, but Carr was very adamant that he had to die. Much like James killing that unarmed guard near the end, which upset some people, it was very much in character to do both things. I’m glad he found a way to give us more of Ben with a prequel series.

Disney and its marketing team and its executives are far more to blame for John Carter flopping than Kitsch.

I watch the blu ray every year or so. Really enjoy the movie.

It is a good film. Disney screwed the pooch.

I think you're confusing the issue with what I said (changing the ending to keep Taylor Kitsch's character)...

you're talking about in-story moral decisions. I don't think Amazon cares that much, either way, on things like that.

I was talking about Amazon wanting to find a way to keep exploiting an obviously popular action duo. The prequel lets that happen, but it's going to be limited. You can't go forward with it.

Failing to mention that it’s the novel that begat everything from Superman to Star Wars is one of the greatest marketing fiascos of all time.

I thought the Savage Son book was better than True Believer. While reading it I was thinking, this could be a great freaking movie…

I’m saying that Carr fought to keep true to the main character over exploiting the popularity of another character. Letting Ben live might be a good business decision, which is why Amazon might have at least suggested he live, but it would undermine what Carr was trying to do with the protagonist.

Listening to his podcast on the production, he was there as a consultant and was part of the team. But there were times when he stepped in and gave firm directions. He says Amazon respected that which he deemed nonnegotiable, despite some aspects being changed. Hopefully he has enough trust now that this has gone from a passion project to a popular hit show with sequels and prequels. We will see.

All these franchise characters need to have the material pumped out much more aggressively. There is so much to cover, they will never get through it.

It’s already developed. They should set up two or three independent cast, writers, production crews on staggered schedules and put out a couple a year. Don’t need stars or high production values, just get it out.

Nah, it wasn't a fiasco, it was diabolically clever.

Disney wanted a big scifi franchise, and there were still board members who thought they could develop their own properties and be successful.
They needed to be shown that quality of product was irrelevant, what you NEEDED was a known, marketable commodity. That was the safest route to success.

So they fricked John Carter over, proving that point; and 6 months later Disney bought Lucasfilm for 4 billion.

You know there had to be chatter of doing this awhile, in the boardroom. You don't drop that much money on a whim; or without a plan. I bet John Carter was the property those reluctant to fork out for Star Wars bet on, and I bet when the execs screened it, they (like everybody who's ever watched the movie) liked it. And thought it would do well.
And the other side said "see, this was actually a good and fun movie, and the returns are horrible. Nobody cares about quality, they want names. Luke, Darth. They want Jedi, not 'jeddaks'."

And I will bet you anything, that side played with the marketing to make it so.
