They really pioneered the use of hit songs throughout each episode ... Michael Mann continued to do it with his movies as well.

I’ve been meaning to start a re-watch but it’s probably going to have to wait until football season is over.
Sandy may just be GOAT tv dad.

quote:Yep. Before that, shows that did play popular songs used cheesy, studio cover versions. The Fall Guy was one of the worst offenders.

In the Air Tonight on Miami Vice was a watershed TV moment.

That's what brought Miami Vice immediately to mind. It was almost every episode there was some popular song and, if not, something awesome by Jan Hammer was playing. "Evan" by him is amazing as is the scene it accompanies.
Songs just from season 1
Just scroll down and look at the pilot episode Brother's Keeper, that's one episode with several popular songs.

Yep, I remember that like yesterday. Sonny and Tubbs driving to do battle and Tubbs loading the shotgun then driving the Ferrari with the lights hitting it from the front bumper shot .... it's gotta be on YouTube right?
Hold on, here we go: LINK
Glenn Frey Miami Vice You Belong to the City was the next big homerun hit for the show. LINK

Mr Robot has used some obscure songs to great effect. My favorite:
Hall of Mirrors
Unfortunately the scene isn't online, just the track.

How has no one said “paint it black” for Tour Of Duty? Are we not counting theme songs?

That 70s Show really nailed it a few times, IMO.
They used Big Star's "Thirteen" throughout the series for Eric and Donna's relationship.
They also used Elvis Costello's "Alison" really well once when Hyde hooked up with this tough girl.

The Sopranos theme song from Alabama 3, “Woke Ip This Morning,” and Frank Sinatra’s “It Was a Very Good Year” to start season 2.

AHS 1984 did a really good job with their song choices/soundtrack

Pictures of you in the first season was fantastic

Obvious answer is Miami Vice but Mr Robot really nailed it too. Perfume Genius song Queen in that scene was perfect along with Pictures of You. And Take me Home by Phil Collins. It's almost like the script was written around the music.

From a relatively recent standpoint (last 20 years), excluding variety shows (e.g. Glee), Scrubs, The Sopranos and The Shield were all pretty good.
Historically, WKRP (before rights issues gutted it for the longest time) had somewhat of an unfair advantage as it was set in a Top 40 radio station in the mid/late 1970s.
For its day, Miami Vice might be the Gold Standard.
