LINK

Gustavo Dudamel is handling the music. I think he is a great choice.

Looks beautifully shot. Really hope this is good. Will be impossible to top the original, but I hope it forges its own path and succeeds.

Pretty safe bet that it is going to look great. Hopefully, the movie works overall.

As a straight male, I just never could get into this -- or any musical for that matter.

But, in this case, it's worse. A bunch of killer gang members just all of a sudden break out in song and dance? What the F*CK?

1.) I promise it won’t turn you gay. Watching musicals doesn’t make you gay. Having sex with men makes you gay. I have watched the original probably 50 times or more. I’m a musician. I’ve played the songs. I’ve never felt like having sex with a man because of this movie (or any other reason, for that matter). All you have to say is “I don’t like the music.”

2.) it is set in the late 50s...it was a different time.

Hmmmm.................

Let me guess, you think musicals are just FABULOUS!

But, you're not gay, right?

As a rule, I don’t care for most musicals because they are dumb AF.

But West Side Story is my jam.

Sue me.

True story --

A friend of mine had a little "dinner party" at his house. I was talking with some of the guys from his neighborhood. I overheard another of his neighbors talking rather loudly about how much he just loves musical theater. It wasn't just what he was saying, but HOW he was saying it.

After the party, I told my friend that while his neighbor is probably deep in the closet, I'd bet everything I owned that he's sucked at least 20 dicks in his lifetime.

My friend assured me that the guy was perfectly straight. He had a good looking wife, a couple of kids. He said that the guy was just involved in the local theater and had always like that sort of thing.

About 3-4 years later, my friend called me and said, "Remember you told me that my neighbor was gay? Well, as it turns out, he's leaving his wife for a dude he met at the local theater that he's been having an affair with for quite some time apparently."

I can honestly say that while I have never actually seen Westside Story in any iteration I am aware of what it is about.....regardless, That is a well done trailer and the cinematography that you can see looks great.

It's a great trailer.

If people will listen to Sondheim's words put to song, this might lead to some other films.

We may never see Assassins filmed, but it's a heck of a libretto, maybe my favorite.

I'll take a stab at this because I can relate. I spent the majority of my life thinking that way.

Until I realized The Blues Brothers was a musical. A damn good one. It became a gateway... to appreciating Grease.

Then I realized the appeal of musicals as I perceive it is that another layer of the story is told through the imagination of characters. They imagine life being more perfect than it is. They want to be more than what they are. The songs and dances are also intended to make you feel something more than just stories told through carefully constructed dialogue.

Give Blues Brothers another watch. Then Grease. See if something clicks. Then take your girl to see Westside Story. Profit.

Not to mention, Rita Moreno shaking her rear end to “America” is one of the sexiest non-sex scenes in a movie.

You can come out of the closet now. It's ok.
