If Lex Luthor stole my dog I’d smash him into the ground too

I didn't really have much problem with this, we didn't really need an origin story same with Spiderman Homecoming. We know the basic story and we know who the Justice League or I guess gang is.

I agree we didn't need another origin story. My problem is the way we're dropped into this is like there's a 100-issue run of a comic and we were given a random one from somewhere in the middle. Something about that just bugs me.

quote:

I kinda agree with this I think to make it more realistic he should have had some hardcore Superman fans who were standing by him regardless or conspiracy theorists who believed the video was faked

Oooooo! I like that. As I've discussed it with some co-workers today we were talking about how when the initial video hits you could have had people start arguing pro-con stances right there in the crowd. This could have also worked with the Lex information released, thus setting up an interesting environment of rabid conspiracy theorists vs rabid conspiracy theorists in a future film as some sort of motivation or explanation for public behavior.

quote:

Don't think that's making him a Mary Sue also pretty sure the only girl obsessed with him was Lex's girl who was obviously super clingy which probably has to do with being around Lex all the time

In one of the first scenes in the Daily Planet they have two girls standing at a desk looking at Jimmy. Both are obviously very attracted to him, one is even fanning herself as she looks at him and mouths something like "so hot". Later Lois mentions something about his way with women and "I don't know how you do it, Jimmy". I would get it if it were some truly attractive guy, but it's not. At best he's average, but likely he wouldn't turn a single head in a club unless he was the only guy there and every female in the place had just gotten out of prison.

For me, it's to such an extreme that it's immersion-breaking.

quote:

I mean that has more to do with Kara not being a great owner and Clark kind of not wanting to dog sit

Absolutely, but the problem is that you don't get that until the very end of the movie. Gunn seemed to stage it like it was supposed to be some sort of amusing "ah-HAH!" moment, but the entire interaction between Superman and Krypto was so out-of-character that it fell flat for me. Had they introduced a scene where she drops the dog off at the start of the movie or just had him explain it early on, it would have all made much more sense and been more fun.

quote:

I never read any Supergirl comics but I do know this is a reference to the Woman of Tomorrow comic where she's also an alcoholic which I'm pretty sure is what's being adapted in the Supergirl movie

That's fine, and maybe that will work well going into her movie. The quick cameo at the very end just doesn't feel like there was enough there (see: earlier comment about starting in the middle of the story).

To be fair, he lives in a universe filled with superheroes. Maybe "looking average" is a bigger turn on when you're constantly being bombarded with statuesque demigods.

Most people I’ve seen that point this out mostly love it.

You sound like a fun time at parties. Jimmy being completely average but being so highly sought after is what makes it funny. But I’ve also seen plenty of women comment on Twitter that they found Jimmy attractive and Clark Kent more attractive than Superman. Women have a much broader spectrum of what they find attractive vs what we men do. Men will likely agree 9/10 times on what woman is attractive and which one is not. Women aren’t like that

Jimmy could have been a paraplegic in this movie and it would have been better than the atrocity committed in BvS.

James Gunn talked about how Supergirl is going to be based off of Woman of Tomorrow and how she's a tougher character than Superman.

SPOILER

In Woman of Tomorrow, she lived in Argo City which broke off entirely when Krypton exploded. So she grew up on a fragment of a planet that was floating in space - she wasn't sent off by her parents to give her a chance at a better life. Part of the city turned to Kryptonite, which killed her parents.
Woman of Tomorrow is really good - it's kind of like a classic western with Supergirl leading a young alien girl on a quest for revenge against the space pirate that killed her dad. The art is excellent.

Fantastic Tuesday
I did my part. The rest of my family will be filtering in to see it over the weekend. I'm hoping that great word of mouth will give this film some legs at the box office.

The Cast:

He isn't my Superman, but the world doesn't revolve around me and I can understand why we may never get the Silver/Bronze Age Superman that is my perfect Kal-El/Clark Kent. But, while lacking in gravitas, this Superman is a good person. Someone too good to be true. And for me that's 90% of the character. People can laugh about him saving squirrels, and being horrified by his co-heroes needlessly killing a monster, but that's Superman. Reeve made me believe that a man can fly, Corenswet made me believe that an overly good Superman can still work in today's world.

That is my Lois. They didn't give her enough to do and they reigned in one of the funniest actors in their cast, but... holy shite.... Lois piloting a futuristic aircraft and dictating the story of the year to Jimmy, while cigar chomping Perry White assesses the copy and Steve Lombard tries to keep his shite together... That's a Curt Swan splash page from a late 1970's issue of Superman Family.

Luthor was done well enough. He wasn't too broad or comical, which is the usual downfall for his portrayal. I'm not a huge fan of the single tear, but even the best Luthors (Clancy Brown and Rosenbaum) had their moments where they completely lost their composure. I want to see Superman take on Brainiac and other villains, but this is one Luthor that I want to see in large or minor roles going forward.

People are laughing about Jimmy Olsen being a sex machine, but this is the best Jimmy Olsen we've ever had on film. Jimmy as the good guy who has girls after him but pines for women out of his league, finds himself being chased by aliens, villainesses and Luthor molls... that's all part of Jimmy. He's also someone who gets shite done. I hope they follow through with a TV series. Jack Kirby's Jimmy Olsen would be an amazing show.

I don't understand how it's so hard for writers to understand Ma and Pa Kent. They're the most important man and woman in the DCU. I'm glad this Pa Kent isn't intentionally doing harm to his son, but... I don't see these simple folk navigating an alien son through adoption, childhood, puberty... Superman: The Animated Series showed you the blueprint. It's very simple.

Either you get Krypto or you don't. For me, it was Gunn telling us from the start, "This is a fun movie. Please don't take it too seriously."

Jor-el and Lara. No. Fix this.

Mr. Terrific. If I was a black dad, right now I'd be out shopping for a Mr. Terrific Halloween costume for my son. That's a great character.

I could nitpick about Hawkgirl screeching, Metamorpho being passive instead of the brash Rex Mason, Guy making "frick you" ring constructs... but it was just too fun seeing them in action.

The Plot

It was slightly convoluted but, overall, I wasn't wincing or rolling my eyes at any point. I think the biggest misstep was the long interview in Lois' apartment. They could've shortened that and added another scene or extended one of the better scenes. I could've used some more of Jimmy and Clark acting stupid in the office, maybe one of Lombard's famous pranks gone wrong.

I wasn't a fan of the entire Luthorville real estate grab popping up again, until the twist where Luthor bankrolls a foreign war just to get Superman to submit. THAT was well done.

One of my favorite parts was the conversation between Lois and Superman while, out the window, the Justice "Gang" are casually battling an interdimensional imp (Mr. Mxyzptlk). Just another day in the DCU.

The hypno-glasses are goofy, yes they're a part of almost forgotten Superman comics lore, and frick it. It worked for me in this fun universe.

There was a lot of stuff to take in on the first viewing. Looking forward to seeing it again. I'm glad that we have Peacemaker and Green Lantern to look forward to on HBO Max, so that we don't have to wait years to see some of these characters again.

SPOILER

In Woman of Tomorrow
I haven't read this and I probably would've been horrified at the drunk Supergirl snippet, if I didn't already no about Mamoa's Lobo. I want to see drunk Supergirl vs Lobo.

And my Supergirl ranged from the swooning teen of the 50's to the Legionnaire of the 60's to the underused blank slate of the 70's and 80's.

They really couldn’t have cast Lobo any better. Might be his best role in any movie if they do it right.

honestly he has a point. They needed a cool black male character and this guy has charisma / is pretty unique in terms of superheroes. I feel like it’s something we haven’t seen before, almost gives me Shaft vibes

I've kinda gotten in to Supergirl, because I liked Woman of Tomorrow so much - it was eye opening to see her as a real character and not just Superman's little cousin. And there are a couple of comic book artists that I like who have done cool covers with her.

These are very good numbers for Superman not only domestic but internationally. The big question now is will fantastic four hurt its legs? If not, Superman will easily cross 600 mil, maybe as high as 640-650.

That wasn't my pt (Mr. Terrific was my fav character). He limited buying the costume to black dads, which I found funny. But I get the world we live in, so I understand why he said it as well.
