$115-$120 million seem to be the predicted OW numbers but some have projected as high as $150 million

James Gunn's Superman by James Gunn is the most James Gunn movie that ever James Gunned. Tonally schizophrenic, with too many characters, a disjointed plot, overloaded CGI, absolutely wild technology and too much forced humour that feels dated and often fails to land, but with some really great moments mixed in. Its a bizarre and frustrating beast. Full review coming tomorrow.

16 years ago, Gathegi was offered the role of Darwin in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, and before he ultimately agreed to play the highly adaptable, regenerative mutant, he voiced his concerns about the character’s abrupt death midway through the film. For Gathegi, the shocking moment underscored age-old problematic tropes.

“I called my agents to say, ‘Hey, listen, I have a problem with the fact that this character is the only Black character in the film aside from Zoë Kravitz’s character. I am also the only mutant who meets an untimely demise halfway through the film,’” Gathegi tells The Hollywood Reporter in support of Superman‘s July 11 theatrical release. “It was 2009 at the time, and I was like, ‘Killing the Black guy first is so played out. I can’t do this.’”

I will agree that Gunn should let the emotional moments breathe at times rather than throwing humor at it too quickly.

MOS is more like TDK in that sense whereas Superman feels very GOTG.

I hope he strikes a little better balance on the next outing

It’s pretty cool they all of a sudden have a black superhero only comic fans would know about, and I think he could rival something like a Falcon in popularity pretty soon.

He was done so well

Just got out.

SPOILERS

Felt like the movie was all over the place in the first act. Settled in nicely after that.

I hated the twist with his parents. Really undermines the core of Superman.

Krypto and Mr. terrific were great. They nailed Lois and Superman, and the whole Daily Planet. The Machine’s attack on Superman’s lungs with the nanobots was excellent.

Completely agree that it was a mistake for Gunn to not let any serious scene breathe a little before jamming a quick out of place joke in. Really took away from the gravity of the situation.

Hawk girl felt pointless.

I agree. I wonder why Gunn chose to make Jor-el and Lara such dark characters. In the past all they wanted was for him to survive.

I went out of my way to post in this thread as I'm not a movie junkie. I wouldn't know what makes for good plot devices, character arcs, themes, narratives, or musical scores. Having said that, this is one of the best super hero movies I've seen in a really long time and I think that's the point... someone like me who doesn't go into a movie with a critical eye enjoyed the hell out of this movie. I might even go a 2nd time to see it.

This is my take. It was just a really fun movie to watch. Folks can over analyze it however much they want…doesn’t bother me at all. But I loved it and am glad that James Gunn is leading the way in this new DCU.

Marvel movies also used to be fun

We are going to see it tonight. My kids are very excited. I had zero expectations, as the trailers looked awful IMO, but I’m feeling better after reading these reviews.

I loved it!! It was jam packed but it was also fun.

The cast is awesome. The Mr Terrific fight scene may be one of the coolest ever.

It’s a great introduction to Superman and they can definitely expand on the depth of his character.

Ps I love that his shield is on the back of his cape. For me that adds an overwhelming nostalgia for Superman.

Liked:
Cast was excellent
Villians were menacing and piwerful
Supporting heros Green Lantern and Mr Terrffic were great
Fight scenes were awesome
Jimmy Olsen had a fun part

Hated:
Jorel and Laura plot twist. Totally sacreligious to the character of Superman. Hated it was not resolved.

Squirrel. I mean. Come. On.

Supergirl drunk and vulgar. Just, why?

Overall I watched this movie twice. First time I saw the first half only and I was struggling with it because it simply doesnt hold a candle to Superman 1 or 2.
Second time I just kinda released myself of expectations and watched it for the style of movie it is and I enjoyed it better.
Its very flawed and very entertaining with a strong cast and visuals. More positives than negatives.
They could have had a masterpiece by changing about 5 things.
-fix Jorel
-have a less vulgar Supergirl
-have Supes win more battles and not need to be helped as much
- the squirrel and Supes dialogue in that scene with the monster and the way Metropolis citizens didnt clear the area was too silly and over the top
-ma and pa could have been more sophisticated and respectable
- Justice gang fight in background of Lois and Supes talk was unnecessary

There. Fix those 6 IMO and it would deserve a very high rating.

It’s a setup for her film which is based on the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The series opens with Supergirl drunk at a bar on an alien world with a red sun.

Looks like domestic will have to carry this movie, but generally comic book movies especially DC are massively front loaded. Guessing 110-120 opening weekend

China completely rejected it and international looks very weak.

Under 600 WW looks very likely, definitely a disappointment

Yep, 550-600 at this point. But WB is making a killing with ancillary revenues so they'll be fine. But this has to be concerning for the comic book genre.

Lol, you may want to rewatch Superman 1 and 2, because your complaint abt crowd control doesn't compute.

Haha
True on that aspect! Roller skating dude, telephone booth guy, etc
Never said they were not flawed either.

Kids liked this new one- so that is good.
